kolkata: Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee has ruled out the possibility of allowing back leaders and workers who left the party and joined dissident factions, describing such individuals as "traitors".

Banerjee's remarks underline a firm position on party discipline and loyalty at a time when political parties in West Bengal are preparing for an increasingly competitive electoral environment.

The TMC leader made it clear that those who crossed over after abandoning the party should not expect an easy return. His comments signal that the party leadership intends to draw a clear distinction between loyal workers and those who switched sides during periods of political uncertainty.

The issue of leaders returning to the TMC has been politically significant in West Bengal. Several politicians who previously left the party have, at different points, expressed interest in returning or renewed their association with the organisation.

Banerjee's latest position suggests that the party may adopt a more selective approach towards such requests.

The TMC has faced several episodes of political defections in recent years, particularly during the period leading up to the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. A number of prominent leaders left the party and joined the BJP, while some subsequently returned to the Trinamool Congress.

The movement of leaders between political parties has remained a major feature of Bengal politics. Parties have often used defections to strengthen their organisational structures, while rival groups have portrayed such movements as evidence of political instability or opportunism.

Banerjee's comments indicate that the TMC leadership wants to send a message that switching sides carries political consequences.

For grassroots workers, the issue of loyalty can be particularly important because party organisations depend heavily on local networks, booth-level workers and long-standing political relationships.

The TMC has been seeking to strengthen its organisational machinery and maintain its dominance in West Bengal. The party is also facing sustained competition from the BJP, which has emerged as its principal challenger in the state.

In this context, questions surrounding defections and the return of former party members can have implications beyond individual political careers.

Banerjee's stance could also discourage leaders considering a switch from assuming that they would automatically be welcomed back if their political calculations change later.

At the same time, the comments highlight the broader debate over political loyalty in Indian politics. Leaders frequently move between parties because of ideological differences, electoral considerations or internal disagreements, while parties must decide whether bringing back former members can strengthen their organisation or create resentment among loyal workers.

The TMC leadership appears to be prioritising organisational discipline over unconditional reconciliation in the latest instance.

The remarks are likely to generate reactions from political opponents and leaders associated with dissident groups. They may also become part of the wider political debate in Bengal as parties begin positioning themselves for future electoral battles.

For the Trinamool Congress, the challenge will be to balance organisational unity with electoral expansion while maintaining the confidence of its grassroots cadre.

Banerjee's latest statement makes one point clear: those who left the TMC to join rival or dissident factions should not assume that the door to the party remains open.
