Are All Banks Open on Sunday, September 27, 2026? Check Status Ahead of Three-Day Bank Strike

Will Banks Be Open on Sunday, September 27?

Public sector banks and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) will function normally on Sunday, September 27, 2026, according to the Ministry of Finance.

The decision was announced ahead of the proposed three-day nationwide bank strike scheduled for September 28 to 30. The government said the additional working day was arranged to prevent customers from facing an extended disruption because September 26 and 27 fall on the preceding weekend.

The Reserve Bank of India has approved the operation of bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests on September 27.

Why Are Banks Opening on a Sunday?

The decision comes against the backdrop of a proposed nationwide strike by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) from September 28 to 30.

With September 26 being the fourth Saturday and September 27 a Sunday, customers could otherwise have faced several consecutive days with limited access to physical banking services.

The government therefore asked banks to maintain operations on September 27 to ensure that essential banking requirements are not affected for an extended period.

Will SBI Be Open on September 27?

Yes. State Bank of India (SBI) has announced that all its branches will remain open on Sunday, September 27, and operate normally.

SBI has advised customers that they can visit its branches for banking services on that day.

What About Other Banks?

The government announcement specifically states that all Public Sector Banks and Regional Rural Banks will function normally on September 27.

RBI has also approved all bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests to remain operational on that date. However, customers should check their individual bank's communication before visiting, particularly in the case of banks outside the public-sector and RRB categories.

What Are Bank Unions Saying?

There has been some disagreement over whether bank employees should work on September 27.

The All India Bank Officers' Association (AIBOA) advised its members not to report to work on Sunday, describing September 27 as a holiday under the Industrial Disputes Act.

Meanwhile, the UFBU was considering the instructions issued by individual banks and was expected to take up the matter with the Indian Banks' Association.

When Is the Three-Day Bank Strike?

The proposed nationwide bank strike is scheduled for:

  • September 28, 2026 — Monday

  • September 29, 2026 — Tuesday

  • September 30, 2026 — Wednesday

The strike has been called by the UFBU amid demands including the implementation of a five-day working week for banks.

What Banking Services Will Be Available?

The RBI's approval covers:

  • Bank branches

  • Bank offices

  • ATM-linked branches

  • Currency chests

This means banking infrastructure has been authorised to remain operational on September 27. Customers who need branch-based services are therefore advised to check their bank's specific instructions before travelling.

Digital banking services such as mobile banking, internet banking and UPI may also continue to be available, although customers should not assume that every service or transaction will operate identically during a strike period.

What Happens From September 28?

The proposed three-day strike could affect branch operations from September 28 to 30, depending on participation and the final position of bank unions.

Customers with urgent branch-related work, including cash deposits, withdrawals, cheque-related work or other services requiring physical interaction, may therefore consider completing them before the strike period.
