Bangladesh Create History in Australia, Defeat Hosts by 9 Wickets
Darwin, August 16, 2026: The biggest story in cricket today has come from Darwin. Bangladesh defeated Australia by 9 wickets on Australian soil to create history. A team expected to struggle in Australia's pace-friendly and bouncy conditions dominated the hosts at almost every major stage of the match.
In the first Test at Marrara Stadium, Bangladesh bowled Australia out for just 198 in the first innings. The visitors then piled up 426 runs. Australia attempted a comeback in the second innings but was restricted to 284. Bangladesh needed just 57 runs to win and reached the target after losing only one wicket.
This was more than just a Test victory. It became one of the biggest achievements in Bangladesh's 26-year Test history. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto also described it as one of Bangladesh's biggest victories in any format.
How Did Bangladesh Turn the Match Around?
Australia scored 198 in the first innings. Bangladesh's batting then completely changed the complexion of the match. Mehidy Hasan Miraz played a useful 65-run innings, while young Tanzid Hasan scored a century to create history on Australian soil. Bangladesh's first innings ended at 426, giving it a crucial 228-run lead.
That was the point when Australia came under serious pressure.
In the second innings, Cameron Green tried to steady Australia with a 104-run knock. However, Bangladesh's bowlers maintained relentless pressure. Mehidy Hasan Miraz claimed five wickets in the second innings, while Hasan Mahmud finished with nine wickets across the match and dismantled Australia's batting lineup.
Australia was bowled out for 284, leaving Bangladesh with a target of only 57 runs.
57-Run Target and Historic Victory
A target of 57 is small by Test standards, but chasing it against Australia on its home soil still comes with pressure.
Bangladesh, however, showed no signs of panic. The team lost just one wicket and completed the chase. Mominul Haque hit the winning boundary to seal Bangladesh's historic victory.
The match ended within four days. In Darwin's hot conditions, Bangladesh outplayed Australia in all three departments: fitness, bowling, and batting.
Bangladesh's First Test Victory on Australian Soil
This is the record that matters most to Bangladesh.
Before this match, Bangladesh had never won a Test in Australia. The teams' previous Test meetings on Australian soil came in 2003, when Australia won both matches. The two sides then went through a long period without playing a Test series in Australia. The 2026 tour marked Bangladesh's return to Australia after 23 years.
And immediately upon returning, Bangladesh changed history.
Did Bangladesh Break India's and Pakistan's Record?
This is an important fact that needs clarification. Some social media posts and headlines claim that Bangladesh has overtaken India and Pakistan to become the Asian team to record its first Test victory in Australia in the fewest matches.
However, based on the historical record, this claim needs to be treated carefully.
Pakistan also secured its first Test victory in Australia in its third Test there. During the 1976-77 tour, Pakistan drew the Adelaide Test, lost the second Test in Melbourne, and then defeated Australia by 8 wickets in the third Test in Sydney. Imran Khan took 12 wickets in that match with a brilliant bowling performance.
Therefore, Bangladesh's major record is that it has also secured its first Test victory in Australia in its third Test appearance there, meaning it has equalled Pakistan's historic record, rather than surpassed Pakistan.
It is correct to say that Bangladesh has moved ahead of India in this respect, but saying that it has overtaken Pakistan would be factually incorrect.
How Did Bangladesh Move Ahead of India?
India had to wait several Test matches before securing its first Test victory in Australia. India's first Test win in Australia came in Melbourne in 1977. Since then, India has recorded several historic victories on Australian soil, including the famous Adelaide victory in 2018-19 and the Gabba triumph in 2020-21.
Compared with India, Bangladesh has achieved its first Test victory in Australia in significantly fewer matches.
The Long Wait from 2003 to 2026
Bangladesh's Australia tour is also an example of an unusually long gap in international cricket.
After 2003, Bangladesh returned to Australia for Test cricket in 2026. Cricket Australia confirmed in February 2026 that two Tests against Bangladesh would be played in Darwin and Mackay. The first Test was scheduled for August 13-17 at Marrara Stadium in Darwin, while the second Test was scheduled for August 22-26 in Mackay.
In other words, after waiting 23 years for another Test tour of Australia, Bangladesh made history in the very first match of the series.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz Emerges as One of the Main Heroes
Mehidy Hasan Miraz played a crucial role in Bangladesh's victory.
He scored 65 in the first innings and then claimed five wickets in the second innings, delivering a major blow to Australia's batting lineup. He also became the first Bangladeshi spinner to take five wickets in a Test innings in Australia.
However, Hasan Mahmud received the Player of the Match award. Hasan took nine wickets across the match and consistently troubled Australia's batsmen in both innings.
Tanzid Hasan's century was another major storyline. He became the first Bangladeshi batter to score a Test century on Australian soil.
A Major Blow for Australia
The defeat is particularly surprising for Australia because the team is traditionally considered extremely strong in home conditions. Before the series, Australia was regarded as a strong contender in the World Test Championship, while the return of experienced players such as captain Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon was expected to strengthen the side further.
Despite this, Australia could not establish batting dominance against Bangladesh.
Captain Pat Cummins also acknowledged that his team had been outplayed in all departments and that poor batting had made the situation difficult from the very first day.
Major WTC Boost for Bangladesh
This match was not just about prestige. The Test series between Australia and Bangladesh is part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27.
After the Darwin victory, Bangladesh's WTC percentage rose to 66.67, moving the team to fourth place in the standings. Australia remained near the top, although its winning percentage declined. India was fifth at 48.15 percent.
From that perspective, Bangladesh's victory gives the team not only historic recognition but also valuable points in the race for the WTC Final.
Why Is This Such Big News for Bangladesh Cricket?
Bangladesh has been working for years to establish itself as a stronger Test side. In recent years, the team has recorded important victories against New Zealand, Pakistan, and other strong opponents.
In 2022, Bangladesh defeated New Zealand in a Test in New Zealand. In 2024, it also recorded a historic Test series victory against Pakistan. Now, in 2026, Bangladesh has defeated Australia on Australian soil, providing another major indication of its progress.
The victory is even more significant because Bangladesh recorded its first Test victory against Australia at home in 2017. Now the same team has defeated Australia in Australia.
All Eyes on the Second Test
Bangladesh now leads the two-match series 1-0. The two teams will play the second Test in Mackay from August 22.
Bangladesh now has a historic opportunity to win the series, while Australia faces the challenge of restoring its reputation.
If Bangladesh wins the second Test as well, it will secure its first Test series victory in Australia and create one of the biggest achievements in the history of Bangladesh cricket.
Conclusion
Bangladesh's 9-wicket victory in Darwin has challenged many of the traditional assumptions surrounding Test cricket. Its first Test win on Australian soil, Tanzid Hasan's historic century, Hasan Mahmud's nine wickets, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz's all-round performance have made the match unforgettable.
Most importantly, Bangladesh did not win through luck. It dominated Australia through batting, bowling, and mental strength. By securing its first Test victory in Australia in fewer matches than India, Bangladesh has moved ahead of India in this particular record while also equaling Pakistan's record of winning its first Test in Australia in its third Test appearance.
Now all eyes will be on Mackay. If Bangladesh wins there as well, this victory over Australia could become more than just a historic Test result. It could mark the beginning of a new era for Bangladesh cricket.
