New Delhi: A host of financial and regulatory changes came into force across India on July 1, affecting millions of citizens. The updates span passport application fees, Aadhaar services, Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) facilities, banking regulations and fuel prices. Here's a look at the biggest changes.
1. Passport application fees increased
Applying for a passport has become more expensive following the implementation of the Passports (Amendment) Rules, 2026.
Some of the key revisions include:
Standard 36-page passport fee increased from ₹1,500 to ₹2,500
60-page passport booklet fee revised upward
Tatkal passport charges have also been increased
The revised fee structure applies to fresh passport applications as well as renewals across various categories.
2. Free Aadhaar email updates
In a relief for Aadhaar holders, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a facility allowing users to update their registered email address free of cost through the Aadhaar mobile application until December 31, 2026.
The move waives the earlier update fee and is aimed at encouraging users to keep their Aadhaar records up to date.
3. EPFO services upgraded
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is rolling out enhanced digital services under its EPFO 3.0 initiative, which aims to simplify provident fund management and improve the user experience.
The upgraded platform is expected to support faster digital transactions and make several PF-related services more accessible online. However, some online EPFO services have temporarily remained unavailable due to scheduled maintenance.
4. New banking and credit card rules
Several banking-related changes have also taken effect:
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has implemented stricter norms to curb the mis-selling of financial products.
SBI Card has revised its rewards programme for select credit cards.
HDFC Bank has updated airport lounge access rules for eligible credit card holders.
These changes are expected to affect how customers use banking and credit card services.
5. Commercial LPG prices revised
Oil marketing companies have reduced the price of 19-kg commercial LPG cylinders, offering relief to hotels, restaurants and commercial establishments.
Domestic LPG cylinder prices, however, remain unchanged.
6. ITR filing deadline approaches
While not a new rule effective July 1, taxpayers have been reminded that the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR-1 and ITR-2) is approaching. Eligible taxpayers are advised to complete the filing process within the prescribed timeline to avoid penalties.
Why these changes matter
The July 1 updates affect a wide cross-section of the population—from passport applicants and salaried employees to bank customers and frequent travellers. While free Aadhaar email updates and enhanced EPFO services are expected to improve convenience, higher passport fees and revised banking rules may require users to plan accordingly.
