BJP Slams Telangana Government Over 'Family Register', Alleges Move to Protect Illegal Vote Banks

Hyderabad: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its criticism of the Telangana government's proposed 'Family Register' initiative, alleging that the exercise is designed to shield "illegal vote banks" instead of serving genuine administrative purposes.

Addressing the media, BJP leaders claimed the proposed register could be used to legitimise ineligible beneficiaries and influence electoral rolls under the guise of updating family records. The party demanded greater transparency from the state government and called for a detailed explanation of how the data would be collected, verified and safeguarded.

The controversy comes as the Telangana government moves ahead with plans to create a comprehensive family database intended to consolidate household information for the delivery of welfare schemes and public services. Officials have said the register is aimed at reducing duplication, improving beneficiary identification and ensuring more efficient implementation of government programmes.

Rejecting the BJP's allegations, the Congress-led Telangana government said the Family Register is an administrative reform designed to improve governance and has no connection with electoral processes. Government representatives asserted that the initiative would help departments coordinate better while ensuring eligible citizens receive welfare benefits without unnecessary paperwork.

The BJP, however, argued that any large-scale data collection exercise must be conducted with complete transparency and adequate safeguards.
