Bodies of 8 Indians killed in Ras Laffan fire repatriated to India: Indian Embassy in Doha

The Indian Embassy in Doha has announced that the bodies of eight Indian nationals who died in a devastating fire at an accommodation facility in Ras Laffan, Qatar, have been repatriated to India.

The embassy confirmed the development in a statement, saying it coordinated with the Qatari government, local authorities and the victims' families to expedite the necessary legal and logistical formalities for the return of the mortal remains.

According to the embassy, officials remained in constant touch with the affected families and ensured that all required documentation, including post-mortem procedures and consular clearances, was completed without delay.

The victims were among workers residing at an accommodation facility in Ras Laffan when a fire broke out, claiming eight lives. Authorities in Qatar launched an investigation into the cause of the blaze soon after the incident. Officials have not yet released the final findings of the inquiry.

Expressing condolences, the Indian Embassy said it stands in solidarity with the families of the deceased and reaffirmed its commitment to extending all possible assistance during the difficult time.

"The Embassy has been working closely with the competent Qatari authorities to facilitate the repatriation of the mortal remains and provide all necessary consular support to the families," the mission said in its statement.

The embassy also thanked the Qatari authorities for their cooperation in completing the repatriation process and assisting the Indian diplomatic mission throughout the operation.

The bodies were flown to India, where local authorities and family members were expected to receive them before the last rites were conducted in their respective hometowns.

The tragedy has drawn condolences from political leaders and community organisations in both India and Qatar. Officials have assured that the families will continue to receive support through the embassy and relevant state governments in India.

India and Qatar share close bilateral ties, with more than 800,000 Indians living and working in the Gulf nation. The Indian Embassy regularly coordinates with Qatari authorities on matters related to the welfare and safety of the Indian diaspora.

The investigation into the Ras Laffan fire remains ongoing, with authorities expected to determine the exact cause of the incident and recommend measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
