New Delhi: Canada has reaffirmed India’s status as a key partner, signalling continued efforts to strengthen bilateral relations across multiple areas, including trade, security, energy and defence.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand highlighted India’s importance following her bilateral meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

In a statement issued by Global Affairs Canada, Anand described India as one of the world’s fast-growing and dynamic economies and stressed its importance to Canada.

Jaishankar-Anand meeting focuses on roadmap

The meeting between Anand and Jaishankar reviewed progress under the Canada-India Roadmap, which sets out areas for expanded cooperation between the two countries.

According to the Canadian readout, both sides welcomed progress on objectives covering trade, security, energy, mobility, innovation and defence. They also reiterated their commitment to continuing implementation of the roadmap.

Jaishankar described the discussion as productive and said the two countries were preparing to take their relationship to a higher level.

Canada looking to diversify partnerships

Anand's latest comments came a day after she addressed the UN General Assembly and spoke about changes in the global economic order.

She said Canada could no longer afford to be overly dependent on any single partner and was therefore seeking to diversify its international relationships. She specifically mentioned opportunities for renewed partnerships with large economies, including India and China.

The Canadian government has also been pursuing stronger economic engagement with India.

Trade negotiations gain momentum

Canada and India are currently working towards a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

Global Affairs Canada said in September that the two countries were aiming to conclude negotiations by the end of 2026, with an objective of more than doubling bilateral trade to CAD 70 billion by 2030.

Canadian International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu also met Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in Mumbai earlier this month to discuss trade and investment opportunities and advance CEPA negotiations.

Relations have seen renewed engagement

The latest developments reflect increased diplomatic engagement between India and Canada after a period of strained relations.

At annual Foreign Office Consultations held in New Delhi on September 2, officials from both countries reaffirmed the importance of bilateral ties and reviewed cooperation in areas including critical minerals, science and technology, education, security and defence, culture and consular matters.

The two sides also emphasised the importance of institutional dialogue and continued engagement.

Focus shifts to economic and strategic cooperation

With Canada describing India as a key partner and both governments pushing ahead with trade negotiations, economic and strategic cooperation is emerging as a major focus of the bilateral relationship.

The coming months are expected to see further engagement on the proposed trade agreement, investment, mobility, energy and other areas identified under the bilateral roadmap.
