CBSE's fresh 3-language policy guidelines: Changes for Classes VI, VII, VIII, IX and X explained

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released fresh guidelines for implementing the three-language policy under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, detailing how language education will be introduced across Classes VI to X.

The revised framework aims to promote multilingual education while giving schools flexibility in implementing the policy. At the same time, CBSE has announced a one-time exemption for students currently in Class IX, allowing them to continue with their existing language combinations without disruption.

What is the three-language policy?

The three-language formula, recommended under NEP 2020, encourages students to study three languages during their school education. The policy does not mandate any specific language, allowing states, schools and students to choose languages based on regional needs and institutional preferences.

The objective is to strengthen multilingual proficiency, improve communication skills and encourage learning of Indian languages alongside other languages.

Changes for Classes VI, VII and VIII

For students in the middle school section (Classes VI to VIII), schools will continue to offer three languages in accordance with the CBSE curriculum and NEP guidelines.

Schools have been asked to ensure that students receive adequate exposure to multilingual learning while maintaining flexibility in language choices. The emphasis will be on building reading, writing, speaking and comprehension skills across all three languages.

What changes for Class IX?

The biggest relief has been announced for students currently studying in Class IX.

CBSE has granted them a one-time exemption, meaning they will not have to change their existing language subjects midway through secondary education. The Board said the decision has been taken to avoid academic inconvenience during the transition to the revised curriculum.

Students already admitted to Class IX can therefore continue with the language combination they had opted for under the earlier framework.

What about Class X students?

Students currently in Class X will continue under the existing examination pattern and language subjects already chosen.

The revised guidelines are not expected to affect students who are nearing completion of their secondary education.

What changes for future batches?

Students entering secondary school in future academic sessions will be required to follow the revised language framework prescribed by CBSE under NEP 2020.

Schools have been instructed to update their curriculum planning, teacher deployment and academic schedules to comply with the new language policy.

Why has CBSE introduced the exemption?

According to the Board, implementing a new language structure in the middle of an academic cycle could create challenges for students and schools alike.

The one-time relaxation is intended to ensure a seamless transition without forcing students to switch languages after beginning their secondary education.

Why it matters

The revised guidelines are part of CBSE's broader effort to align school education with the objectives of NEP 2020, which places strong emphasis on multilingualism, flexibility in learning and holistic education.

By offering transitional relief to the current Class IX batch while implementing the new framework for future students, the Board hopes to balance educational reform with practical concerns raised by schools and parents.
