Centre Defends LPG Price Hike, Cites Subsidy Cuts
The Union government has defended the recent LPG cylinder price hike, stating that it is part of a broader subsidy rationalisation strategy aimed at balancing fiscal pressure and global energy costs. The move has triggered political criticism and household concern across India, including West Bengal and Haldia. Officials say the adjustment is necessary to maintain long-term energy sustainability while protecting targeted welfare schemes.

New Delhi | LPG price revision sparks nationwide debate
The Centre on Monday defended the recent increase in domestic LPG cylinder prices, saying the revision is linked to global energy fluctuations and a phased reduction in blanket subsidies. The clarification comes amid growing criticism from opposition parties and rising concern among households already facing inflationary pressure.
According to officials from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the price adjustment is part of an ongoing effort to streamline subsidies and ensure that support reaches only eligible beneficiaries under targeted welfare frameworks.
The revised pricing, implemented earlier this week, has led to an immediate political flashpoint, with opposition leaders calling it “anti-consumer” and alleging that common households are being burdened at a time of rising food and fuel costs.
Background: Why LPG prices matter so much
Cooking gas remains one of the most essential household commodities in India. Over the last decade, LPG coverage has expanded significantly under schemes like Ujjwala, with millions of households shifting from traditional fuels to cylinders.
However, the pricing structure has been sensitive to global crude oil movements and currency fluctuations. Public sector oil marketing companies such as Indian Oil Corporation periodically revise rates based on import costs and government subsidy policies.
Officials argue that while subsidies still exist for eligible families, universal price support has been gradually reduced to prevent excessive fiscal burden.
A senior ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “The intention is not to reduce accessibility but to ensure that subsidies are targeted and sustainable. Global energy markets remain volatile, and India cannot remain insulated from them.”
Key details of the price hike
While exact revisions vary by state due to local taxation structures, the average domestic LPG cylinder price has reportedly increased across metropolitan and semi-urban markets.
In West Bengal, households have reported an increase that is already being reflected in retail distribution networks. In districts like Haldia and surrounding areas of Purba Medinipur, gas agencies have begun updating billing systems, leading to immediate consumer reactions.
Retail distributors say demand has not dropped yet, but enquiries from consumers about subsidy status have increased sharply.
A gas agency operator in Haldia said, “Customers are concerned, especially middle-income families. Many are asking whether subsidies will be restored or adjusted again in the coming months.”
Political reactions intensify
The price hike has triggered strong responses from opposition parties, who have accused the Centre of ignoring household inflation pressures.
Several leaders have argued that essential commodities like cooking gas should remain insulated from frequent price revisions. Some have also linked the timing of the hike to broader economic challenges facing urban and rural households.
The ruling side, however, maintains that the move is economically necessary and prevents long-term fiscal strain. Officials argue that direct benefit transfer systems ensure that subsidies still reach the most vulnerable households.
Impact on households in West Bengal and Haldia
In West Bengal, where LPG dependency has grown rapidly over the past decade, the price revision is expected to have a visible impact on monthly household budgets.
In semi-industrial regions like Haldia, where both working-class and middle-income families rely on LPG for daily cooking, the increase is likely to add pressure alongside rising food and transport costs.
Local traders also warn of a secondary inflation effect. When cooking fuel prices rise, small eateries and street food vendors often adjust prices, which then cascades into daily food expenses.
A resident of Haldia said, “Even a small increase matters. For families with fixed income, cooking gas is not optional. It affects everything else in the monthly budget.”
Economic rationale and government position
The government’s argument is centred around three key points:
Global crude and LNG price volatility continues to affect import costs
Subsidy expenditure needs rationalisation for fiscal stability
Targeted welfare delivery is more efficient than universal subsidies
Officials maintain that India’s energy pricing must reflect international realities while still protecting vulnerable groups through direct benefit mechanisms.
Economists are divided on the approach. Some say targeted subsidies are necessary in a large economy, while others argue that sudden price changes create household stress and political backlash.
What happens next
Energy analysts expect further clarification from the Centre in the coming weeks, especially if global oil prices remain unstable. There is also speculation that additional support measures could be considered for low-income households if inflation pressure continues.
For now, the focus remains on how quickly the market stabilises and whether state-level taxation adjustments influence final retail prices.
