The West Bengal Crime Investigation Department (CID) on Thursday detained Sumit Roy, the personal assistant of Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee, shortly after the Supreme Court refused to grant him anticipatory bail in the alleged Salboni land scam case.

According to CID sources, Roy was taken into custody near Abhishek Banerjee’s residence in Kolkata. A team comprising CID personnel and the Special Task Force (STF) reportedly carried out the operation after receiving information about his whereabouts.

The Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana declined to interfere with the Calcutta High Court’s earlier decision rejecting Roy’s anticipatory bail plea.

The development removed the legal protection that had prevented Roy’s immediate arrest, allowing investigators to take further action in the case. The Calcutta High Court had rejected his anticipatory bail plea on August 3.
