Congress Accuses Modi Government of Being ‘Intoxicated on Power’ Over Cut in Subsidised Ujjwala Refills
The Congress party has criticized the Centre over the reported reduction in the number of subsidised LPG refills available under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), accusing the Modi government of ignoring the struggles of poor households. The BJP, however, maintains that its welfare initiatives continue to benefit millions of families across the country.

Congress Targets Centre Over Ujjwala Scheme Changes
The Indian National Congress on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the Narendra Modi-led government over the reported reduction in the number of subsidised LPG cylinder refills under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.
Congress leaders alleged that the decision would increase the financial burden on economically weaker households, particularly women in rural and low-income families who depend on subsidised cooking gas.
The party accused the Centre of moving away from its welfare commitments and failing to address the rising cost of living.
‘Intoxicated on Power’, Says Congress
In a strongly worded statement, Congress leaders claimed that the government had become "intoxicated on power" and was disconnected from the daily struggles of ordinary citizens.
The opposition argued that reducing subsidy support under a flagship welfare programme could undermine the benefits that the Ujjwala scheme initially provided to millions of beneficiaries.
Congress leaders also linked the issue to broader concerns over inflation, fuel prices, and household expenses.
Ujjwala Scheme Remains a Key Welfare Programme
The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was launched to provide LPG connections to women from economically weaker households and reduce dependence on traditional cooking fuels.
The programme has been widely promoted by the government as one of its flagship social welfare initiatives, with millions of beneficiaries receiving LPG connections across the country.
Supporters of the scheme argue that it has improved health outcomes, reduced indoor air pollution, and enhanced the quality of life for rural households.
BJP Defends Welfare Record
Leaders of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party rejected the Congress criticism and defended the government's welfare record.
BJP representatives said the Modi government has expanded social welfare programmes, strengthened direct benefit transfers, and continued support for vulnerable sections of society.
Party leaders also highlighted achievements in housing, sanitation, healthcare, and food security, arguing that the government's overall welfare commitment remains strong.
Political Battle Over Cost of Living
The dispute reflects a broader political battle between the ruling party and the opposition over inflation and living costs.
Opposition parties have increasingly focused on issues such as fuel prices, food inflation, and household expenses, claiming that economic pressures are affecting millions of families.
The BJP, meanwhile, argues that welfare measures and economic reforms have helped cushion the impact of global economic challenges.
Welfare Policies Likely to Remain Political Flashpoint
Analysts believe welfare schemes such as Ujjwala will continue to be a major point of debate as political parties seek to connect with voters.
Subsidies, social protection programmes, and direct financial support remain important electoral issues, particularly among lower-income and rural communities.
With both the government and opposition presenting contrasting narratives, discussions surrounding welfare benefits and subsidy policies are expected to remain prominent in national political discourse.
