New Delhi: India's festive shopping season is expected to be bigger than ever in 2026, with consumers increasingly turning to e-commerce and quick-commerce platforms for seasonal purchases. At the same time, India's space-tech ecosystem received a major boost as Pixxel raised $100 million in fresh funding.
According to industry estimates cited by ETtech, online festive sales are expected to reach Rs 1.50-1.55 lakh crore this year, representing growth of around 25-29% compared with approximately Rs 1.20 lakh crore during the 2025 festive season.
Festive E-commerce Sales Set for Strong Growth
E-commerce marketplaces and online retailers are preparing for what could become a record festive shopping season.
Market research firm Datum Intelligence expects festive online gross merchandise value (GMV) to rise substantially as consumers increase spending during major festive sales and promotional events.
Mobile phones are expected to remain the biggest category, accounting for approximately 29.8% of online festive GMV in 2026. Lifestyle products are projected to contribute around 15.5%, while appliances are expected to account for 13.6%.
The strong outlook follows encouraging early festive trends. According to ETtech, sales volumes during Independence Day this year increased by around 25% for both online and offline retailers, signalling stronger consumer demand ahead of the main festive shopping period.
Quick Commerce Expected to Gain Share
The growth is not expected to be limited to traditional e-commerce marketplaces. Quick commerce platforms are also projected to capture a larger share of festive spending.
Analysts estimate that quick commerce could account for approximately 16% of festive spending, equivalent to around Rs 24,000 crore.
The sector is benefiting from consumers' growing preference for fast delivery, particularly for last-minute purchases, groceries, gifting products and festive essentials.
Quick-commerce companies are also expected to increase temporary hiring. Industry estimates suggest that platforms could hire 35-40% more temporary workers during this festive season compared with last year.
Brands Prepare Festive-Specific Products
Brands and retailers are also adapting their inventories to capture regional and occasion-specific demand.
Companies are introducing festive-specific stock-keeping units (SKUs) for different occasions and regions, allowing them to tailor products and promotions to local consumer preferences.
However, businesses are also dealing with higher raw material and packaging costs amid geopolitical uncertainties. This could put pressure on margins even as festive demand strengthens.
Pixxel Raises $100 Million
While consumer spending is expected to provide a boost to India's digital commerce sector, the country's technology ecosystem also received significant investor attention.
Indian space-tech startup Pixxel has raised $100 million in a Series C funding round, marking the largest funding round raised by an Indian space-technology company to date.
The funding round was co-led by Singapore state investor Temasek and UK-based space technology investor Seraphim.
New investors 360 ONE Asset and IMM Investment participated in the round, alongside existing investors including Radical Ventures and growX Ventures.
The latest investment takes Pixxel's total funding to $195 million.
Where Will Pixxel Use the Fresh Capital?
Pixxel said the new capital will help it expand beyond its original focus on hyperspectral satellite imaging.
The Bengaluru-based company plans to build a broader planetary infrastructure business combining advanced sensing satellites, Earth-intelligence software, sovereign space systems and satellite manufacturing.
Its Aurora platform is being developed to convert satellite data into integrated, decision-ready Earth intelligence, while the company is also expanding its satellite constellation and imaging capabilities.
Pixxel said the funding will support the development of its Honeybee satellite constellation, high-resolution imaging satellites and other space infrastructure.
Pixxel's Valuation and Future Plans
People familiar with the transaction cited by ETtech said the seven-year-old startup could now be valued at around $400-450 million, although the company has not officially disclosed the valuation or detailed terms of the transaction.
Founder and CEO Awais Ahmed said the latest investment came through fresh shares, with the entire proceeds going to Pixxel.
The company is also considering venture debt as it expands its satellite manufacturing capacity and constellation operations. Ahmed indicated that reaching a $1 billion valuation could require another equity round.
India's Space-Tech Ecosystem Gains Momentum
Pixxel's latest fundraise highlights the growing investor interest in India's private space sector.
India's space-tech ecosystem has expanded rapidly following policy changes that opened greater opportunities for private companies. Startups are now active across satellite manufacturing, Earth observation, launch vehicles, propulsion and space-based data analytics.
Pixxel's latest round also strengthens its position among India's most heavily funded space-tech startups. Its total funding of $195 million puts it ahead of several other major Indian space companies in cumulative capital raised.
Two Signs of India's Growing Digital Economy
The festive shopping boom and Pixxel's fundraise highlight two very different but significant trends in India's technology-driven economy.
On one side, rising consumer spending is pushing e-commerce and quick commerce towards another record festive season. On the other, investors are putting increasingly large amounts of capital into deep-tech businesses with ambitions to compete globally.
The expected festive sales surge could provide a major boost to online retailers, logistics companies, payment platforms and temporary employment, while Pixxel's funding could accelerate the development of India's private space and Earth-intelligence capabilities.
