FIFA rejects France request to honour Didier Deschamps’ late mother, reveals reason behind decision

An emotional moment for the French national football team during the FIFA World Cup was overshadowed after FIFA rejected a request from the French Football Federation (FFF) to honour head coach Didier Deschamps' late mother before their final group-stage match against Norway.

Deschamps was absent from the touchline as he travelled back to France following the death of his mother, Ginette Deschamps, earlier this week. Assistant coach Guy Stéphan took charge of the team in his absence as Les Bleus secured an emphatic 4-1 victory to finish top of Group I.

Ahead of the match, the FFF had sought FIFA's permission for France players to wear black armbands as a mark of respect for their manager's bereavement. The federation also initially informed reporters that a minute's silence would be observed before kick-off in memory of Deschamps' mother.

However, FIFA declined both requests.

The governing body later clarified that the scheduled minute's silence had already been designated to honour the victims of the deadly earthquake in Venezuela, leaving no scope for an additional official tribute before the match. As a result, the FFF withdrew its earlier announcement regarding a tribute specifically for Deschamps' mother.

According to multiple reports, FIFA also rejected France's request to allow the players to wear black armbands during the game, a decision that has sparked criticism from sections of the football community and supporters.

Despite the emotional circumstances and the absence of their long-serving coach, France delivered one of their best performances of the tournament. Ousmane Dembélé starred with a first-half hat-trick, while Désiré Doué added another goal as Les Bleus defeated Norway 4-1 to secure first place in their group and carry momentum into the knockout stage.

Speaking after the victory, Guy Stéphan said the players were determined to produce a performance that would provide comfort to Deschamps during a difficult period. He revealed that the squad dedicated the win to their absent manager, who is expected to rejoin the team before preparations begin for the Round of 32.

Deschamps, who has managed France since 2012, remains one of the country's most successful coaches, guiding the team to the 2018 FIFA World Cup title and the 2022 World Cup final. His temporary departure from the squad came after he returned home to attend his mother's funeral, with the FFF fully supporting his decision.

While FIFA's explanation centred on protocol surrounding official tributes, the refusal has generated debate over whether exceptions should be made in cases involving personal bereavement during major international tournaments.

France will now shift its focus to the knockout rounds, with Deschamps expected to resume his duties after rejoining the squad in the United States.
