HAL set to deliver 4 Dhruv NG helicopters to Pawan Hans

New Delhi: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is set to strengthen Pawan Hans' helicopter fleet with deliveries of its indigenous Dhruv New Generation (NG) helicopters, with four aircraft earmarked for offshore operations connected to Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC).

The deliveries are part of a larger 10-helicopter order placed by Pawan Hans with HAL. The contract, signed in January 2026, is valued at more than ₹1,800 crore, including associated spares and accessories. HAL has said the overall contract is scheduled to be completed by 2027.

Four helicopters for ONGC operations

The four Dhruv NG helicopters are linked to Pawan Hans' arrangement to provide helicopter services for ONGC's offshore operations.

The aircraft will be used to transport personnel and equipment to offshore oil and gas installations, a demanding operating environment where reliability and payload capability are particularly important.

Pawan Hans had earlier received an order to deploy four Dhruv-NG helicopters for offshore operations for a period of 10 years. The subsequent January 2026 contract with HAL expanded the procurement to 10 helicopters.

HAL's ₹1,800-crore Pawan Hans contract

HAL signed the contract with Pawan Hans on January 29, 2026, for the supply of 10 Dhruv NG helicopters along with associated equipment, spares and accessories.

The order was placed by a domestic government entity and falls under the domestic procurement category. HAL described the contract as an arm's-length transaction, with no related-party interest involving its promoter or promoter-group entities.

The deal is significant for HAL's push into India's civilian helicopter market, alongside its established military helicopter programmes.

What is Dhruv NG?

The Dhruv NG is the next-generation civil version of HAL's Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) family.

The platform is designed for a range of applications, including passenger transport, offshore operations, search and rescue, emergency services and other specialised missions.

The helicopter is particularly important to India's efforts to expand the use of indigenously developed aircraft in civilian aviation.

A Dhruv NG operated by Pawan Hans has already been showcased in the company's colours, demonstrating the aircraft's role in the civil helicopter sector.

Boost for India's indigenous helicopter programme

The Pawan Hans order comes as HAL expands its focus beyond military aviation and looks to build a larger presence in India's commercial and civil aviation market.

Pawan Hans is a government-owned helicopter services company whose operations include support for the oil sector, remote-area connectivity and charter services. The deployment of Dhruv NG aircraft could therefore provide HAL with an important domestic reference customer for its civil helicopter programme.

The wider order pipeline is also significant. Recent industry reporting indicates that HAL is targeting deliveries of eight ALH helicopters to Pawan Hans, alongside additional aircraft for other customers, as part of its broader helicopter production programme.

Why the delivery matters

The upcoming deliveries are important not only for HAL and Pawan Hans but also for India's broader Atmanirbhar Bharat push in aerospace manufacturing.

Using an Indian-designed helicopter for offshore energy operations can reduce dependence on foreign platforms while creating opportunities for domestic maintenance, repair and overhaul services.

For Pawan Hans and ONGC, the aircraft are expected to support regular offshore movement of personnel and equipment, while for HAL, successful deployment could help establish the Dhruv NG as a more prominent player in India's civil helicopter market.
