IMD issues highest-level weather warning for Mumbai amid intensifying monsoon

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed Mumbai under a red alert, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours as the southwest monsoon intensifies across Maharashtra. The warning also covers the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including Thane, Raigad and Palghar, with isolated places likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall.

A red alert is the highest category of weather warning issued by the IMD and indicates the possibility of severe weather conditions that could pose risks to life and property. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from waterlogged areas and monitor official weather updates for further advisories.

The latest forecast comes after Mumbai witnessed persistent rainfall over the past 24 hours, with several parts of the city recording significant precipitation. According to civic data, Mandavi Fire Station registered one of the highest rainfall totals, while heavy showers led to waterlogging in low-lying areas and affected normal traffic movement. Authorities have also cautioned residents about high tide conditions, which could worsen flooding in vulnerable locations.

The IMD has warned that intense rainfall may continue through Saturday, driven by active monsoon conditions over western India. The weather department expects heavy to very heavy rain at several places, with isolated pockets likely to receive extremely heavy showers capable of causing localized flooding, reduced visibility and transport disruptions.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and other civic agencies have been placed on alert, with emergency response teams monitoring flood-prone locations and drainage systems. Disaster management officials are coordinating with transport authorities to ensure a quick response in case of disruptions to road, rail or air services.

Commuters have been advised to plan their journeys carefully, as heavy rain could affect suburban train operations, increase traffic congestion and lead to delays in bus services. Motorists have also been urged to exercise caution while driving through low-lying stretches susceptible to water accumulation.

The IMD has asked residents to stay indoors whenever possible during periods of intense rainfall, secure loose outdoor objects and avoid venturing near rivers, beaches and other water bodies until weather conditions improve. Authorities are expected to issue updated advisories depending on the evolution of the monsoon system over the next 24 hours.
