Imtiaz Ali Calls Love Aaj Kal 2 a ‘Useless Experiment’
Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has admitted that his 2020 film Love Aaj Kal starring Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan was “a useless experiment” and not a “viable project.” His candid remarks have reignited debate over the film’s failure, audience expectations, and Bollywood’s growing struggle with remakes and sequels.

‘I went wrong somewhere’: Imtiaz Ali opens up on the film’s failure
Six years after the release of Love Aaj Kal, director Imtiaz Ali has made perhaps his sharpest public criticism of the film yet. Speaking during a recent media interaction, the filmmaker admitted that the movie “did not work emotionally” and described it as a “useless experiment” that should probably never have moved beyond the idea stage.
The statement has quickly gone viral across social media platforms, with fans revisiting the troubled legacy of the film that attempted to modernise the emotional template of Ali’s 2009 cult romance.
The 2020 film starred Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan in lead roles and was released shortly before the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted theatres across India. Despite strong pre-release buzz and massive online engagement around the lead pair, the film failed to impress critics and audiences.
Now, Ali himself appears to agree with much of that criticism.
“Maybe it wasn’t a viable project from the start. I was experimenting too much with emotions and structure,” the director reportedly said during the interaction.
The remark struck a chord because Ali has long been considered one of Bollywood’s most emotionally intuitive filmmakers. His films such as Jab We Met, Rockstar and Tamasha built a loyal audience that expected layered storytelling and unconventional romance.
That reputation made the failure of Love Aaj Kal 2 even more visible.
A sequel nobody fully understood
When the film was announced, expectations were enormous. The original Love Aaj Kal starring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone had become one of the defining urban romance films of its generation.
Audiences connected deeply with its exploration of modern relationships, commitment fears and emotional maturity. Its music, dialogue and emotional conflicts remained popular for years.
The 2020 version attempted to recreate that emotional resonance for Gen-Z audiences. Instead, viewers complained that the screenplay felt confusing, emotionally disconnected and overly stylised.
Critics at the time pointed to abrupt tonal shifts, inconsistent character arcs and dialogues that felt forced rather than natural. Even fans of Ali admitted that the emotional vulnerability seen in his earlier films seemed missing.
Industry observers also noted that the film suffered from comparisons to the original from the very first teaser launch.
“The audience did not want a recreation. They wanted an emotional evolution,” Mumbai-based film trade analyst Rakesh Menon told entertainment portals this week while reacting to Ali’s statement.
“That balance never came together.”
Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan faced intense scrutiny
The film’s release also coincided with enormous media attention around the rumoured off-screen relationship between Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan.
Their public appearances, interviews and promotional chemistry generated significant buzz before the release. However, after the film underperformed, the focus quickly shifted toward criticism of performances and screenplay choices.
For Sara Ali Khan in particular, the film became one of the most discussed setbacks of her early career. Several scenes from the movie were heavily mocked online and turned into memes across Instagram and X.
Kartik Aaryan, meanwhile, recovered commercially with later successes including Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and other mainstream projects.
Neither actor has publicly reacted to Imtiaz Ali’s latest remarks so far.
Bollywood’s remake and sequel fatigue
Ali’s comments have reopened a broader conversation inside Bollywood about the industry’s dependence on spiritual sequels, remakes and nostalgia-driven storytelling.
Over the last decade, multiple filmmakers have attempted to revive successful titles from the 2000s. While some projects found commercial success, many struggled because audiences increasingly demanded originality.
Entertainment analysts say Love Aaj Kal 2 became an example of how emotional nostalgia alone cannot guarantee audience connection.
“There was a time when a famous title itself could pull crowds,” Kolkata-based entertainment commentator Sayan Bhattacharya said.
“That formula is fading. Young audiences today are extremely vocal online. They reject films very quickly if they feel emotionally disconnected.”
This trend has become especially visible in the post-pandemic streaming era, where viewers compare Bollywood content not just with other Hindi films but with Korean dramas, international streaming series and regional Indian cinema.
Social media reactions flood X and Instagram
Soon after clips of Ali’s remarks surfaced online, social media platforms were flooded with reactions.
Some users appreciated the filmmaker’s honesty.
Others felt the criticism was too harsh toward a film that at least attempted something different emotionally.
One widely shared post on X read:
“Rare to see a Bollywood director openly admit a film didn’t work. Respect for the honesty.”
Another user wrote:
“Love Aaj Kal 2 had good music and moments, but it lacked soul.”
Fan pages dedicated to Sara Ali Khan also defended her performance, arguing that weak writing rather than acting was the film’s biggest problem.
The discussion has once again pushed the film into Google search trends, particularly among younger audiences revisiting old Bollywood debates.
Imtiaz Ali’s career still commands respect
Despite the failure of Love Aaj Kal 2, Imtiaz Ali remains one of Hindi cinema’s most influential contemporary directors.
His films continue to enjoy strong streaming numbers and loyal fan communities. Many viewers still revisit works like Tamasha and Rockstar years after release.
Film critics say Ali’s willingness to publicly acknowledge failure may actually strengthen his credibility.
In an industry where directors rarely criticise their own work openly, the honesty stood out.
“It shows self-awareness,” said independent film critic Neha Arora.
“Directors evolve through failure. Audiences usually appreciate honesty more than defensive PR.”
What happens next
The renewed conversation around Love Aaj Kal 2 comes at a time when Bollywood is undergoing a larger creative reset. Producers are increasingly cautious about expensive remakes and legacy franchises after several recent disappointments.
For Imtiaz Ali, the focus now shifts toward future projects and whether he returns to the emotionally grounded storytelling that made him one of India’s most admired filmmakers.
As clips of his statement continue circulating online, one thing is clear — years after its release, Love Aaj Kal 2 still sparks strong reactions, even if not for the reasons its makers originally hoped.
