CBDT Extends AY 2026-27 ITR Filing Deadline
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for Assessment Year 2026-27 for taxpayers covered under the specified audit category.
The ITR filing deadline, which was earlier October 31, 2026, has now been extended to November 21, 2026. The extension applies to persons covered under the relevant provision of Section 139(1) of the Income-tax Act, 1961.
Tax Audit Deadline Extended to October 21
Along with the ITR filing deadline, the specified date for furnishing the tax audit report has also been extended.
The audit report deadline has been moved from September 30, 2026, to October 21, 2026, giving eligible taxpayers and chartered accountants additional time to complete the audit and related compliance work.
Who Gets the Deadline Extension?
The revised dates apply to taxpayers mentioned at Serial No. 2 in the table under Explanation 2 to Section 139(1) of the Income-tax Act.
This broadly covers taxpayers whose accounts are required to be audited under the Income-tax Act or another applicable law, including certain companies, other persons subject to tax audit and eligible partners of firms whose accounts are required to be audited.
New AY 2026-27 Tax Compliance Dates
The revised deadlines are:
ComplianceEarlier Due DateRevised Due DateTax Audit ReportSeptember 30, 2026October 21, 2026ITR Filing for Specified Audit CasesOctober 31, 2026November 21, 2026
The extension provides an additional 21 days for both stages of the compliance process.
Why Were the Deadlines Extended?
The extension comes after tax professionals raised concerns about the limited time available for completing audits and preparing returns following the earlier ITR filing deadlines.
The CBDT has extended both dates, allowing taxpayers and professionals additional time to finalise accounts, complete audit procedures and submit the required returns.
Transfer Pricing Cases Have Different Deadlines
Taxpayers covered by Section 92E, including those with international transactions or specified domestic transactions requiring Form 3CEB, have separate compliance timelines.
According to tax experts cited in reports, the ITR deadline for such transfer-pricing cases remains November 30, 2026, while the tax audit and transfer-pricing report/Form 3CEB deadlines remain October 31, 2026.
Therefore, taxpayers should identify which category they fall under before relying on the revised November 21 deadline.
Formal Notification to Follow
The CBDT has announced the extension and stated that a formal order or notification giving effect to the revised dates will be issued separately.
Taxpayers should therefore keep track of the official Income Tax Department communications and ensure that their returns and audit reports are filed within the applicable revised deadlines.
What Taxpayers Should Do Now
Eligible taxpayers should use the additional time to complete pending accounting records, reconcile financial information, coordinate with chartered accountants and prepare their ITRs.
The extension does not mean that every taxpayer gets a November 21 deadline. The revised date specifically applies to the taxpayers covered by the CBDT announcement.
Key Takeaways
