Independents Make Strong Showing in Rajasthan Civic Polls

Independent candidates have emerged as significant players in Rajasthan's urban local body elections, adding a new dimension to the contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress.

The BJP emerged as the largest party, winning 4,179 of the 10,244 wards across 309 urban local bodies. Congress secured 3,613 wards, while independent candidates won 2,273 wards.

BJP Leads, Congress Follows

Although the BJP secured the largest number of wards, its lead over Congress was not enough to produce clear majorities across all urban bodies.

The BJP won 566 more wards than Congress overall. However, the results at the individual municipal level were considerably more fragmented, giving independent councillors an important role in determining who controls several local bodies.

Independents Become Key Players

The strong performance of independents means that they could become crucial in post-election negotiations for mayoral and chairperson positions.

BJP Wins Majority in Four Municipal Corporations

Among Rajasthan's 10 municipal corporations, the BJP secured clear majorities in four — Jaipur, Udaipur, Kota and Bhilwara.

Congress, meanwhile, secured a majority in Bikaner. In Ajmer, Alwar, Jodhpur and Pali, neither of the two major parties managed to secure a majority, making independent councillors potentially decisive in the next stage of the political process.

Bharatpur Shows Strength of Independent Candidates

Bharatpur has emerged as one of the clearest examples of the influence of independent candidates. Independents performed strongly in the 65-member municipal corporation, putting them in a position to have a major say in the formation of its leadership.

The result demonstrates how local political factors and individual candidates can challenge the traditional dominance of major political parties in urban elections.

Repolling in Nine Wards

The final political calculations have been delayed in some areas because repolling has been ordered in nine wards following technical problems involving electronic voting machines during counting.

Repolling is scheduled at 10 booths across Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota and Suket municipality on September 16. Four affected wards are in Jaipur, one in Jodhpur, three in Kota and one in Suket.

Mayors and Chairpersons to Be Elected

The Rajasthan State Election Commission has issued a notice for the election of mayors and chairpersons in 305 of the state's 309 urban local bodies.

These elections are scheduled for September 21, after the repolling process is completed. The large number of independent councillors could make these leadership elections particularly significant in municipalities where the BJP and Congress lack clear majorities.
