India, Indonesia Seal BrahMos, Astra Missile Deals; Deepen Strategic Partnership

India and Indonesia have taken a major step in expanding their strategic partnership by finalising defence agreements for the supply of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and Astra beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air missiles.

The agreements mark one of the most significant milestones in bilateral defence cooperation, reflecting New Delhi's push to expand indigenous defence exports while reinforcing security partnerships across the Indo-Pacific region.

The missile deals are expected to strengthen Indonesia's defence capabilities and further cement the two countries' growing strategic relationship amid evolving geopolitical dynamics in the region.

Major boost to defence cooperation

The BrahMos missile system, jointly developed by India and Russia, is regarded as one of the world's fastest operational supersonic cruise missiles. Capable of being launched from land, sea and air platforms, it has become a key component of India's defence export strategy.

The Astra missile, developed by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is an indigenous beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile designed to engage enemy aircraft at long distances. Its inclusion in the agreements highlights India's growing confidence in exporting domestically developed defence technologies.

The latest deals follow India's broader efforts to position itself as a reliable defence manufacturing hub under the 'Make in India' initiative.

Strategic partnership expands

Beyond defence procurement, both countries agreed to deepen cooperation in maritime security, defence industry collaboration, military training and regional security dialogue.

India and Indonesia share a strategic interest in maintaining a free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific. Both nations have consistently emphasised the importance of freedom of navigation, maritime security and adherence to international law in the region.

The expanded partnership is also expected to encourage greater collaboration between the two countries' armed forces through joint exercises, intelligence sharing and capacity-building initiatives.

Over the past few years, New Delhi has actively pursued defence partnerships with countries across Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa, aiming to increase exports of indigenously developed military equipment.
