‘Indian Diplomacy Works 24/7 for the Nation’: Jaishankar Highlights Foreign Policy Transformation Over 12 Years

Jaishankar Reflects on 12 Years of Foreign Policy Evolution

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Saturday highlighted the transformation of India's foreign policy over the past 12 years, stating that Indian diplomacy today operates "24/7 for the nation."

Speaking at an event focused on India's global engagement, Jaishankar said the country's diplomatic approach has become more proactive, responsive, and focused on protecting national interests across the world.

According to the minister, India's international standing has strengthened significantly through sustained diplomatic outreach, strategic partnerships, and active participation in global affairs.

Greater Global Presence and Influence

Jaishankar noted that India has expanded its presence on the world stage through deeper engagement with major powers, neighboring countries, and emerging economies.

He pointed to India's growing role in multilateral forums, global economic discussions, climate negotiations, and international security initiatives.

The minister said Indian diplomacy now focuses not only on government-to-government relations but also on serving citizens abroad and supporting national development goals.

Focus on Citizens and Diaspora

A key aspect of the transformation, according to Jaishankar, has been the increased emphasis on citizen-centric diplomacy.

He highlighted efforts to assist Indians overseas during emergencies, evacuations, and crises in different parts of the world. Over the past decade, India has conducted multiple large-scale evacuation missions to bring citizens home from conflict zones and disaster-hit regions.

The minister said protecting the interests of the Indian diaspora has become an important component of foreign policy.

Strategic Partnerships Strengthened

India has significantly expanded strategic cooperation with countries across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas during the past decade.

Jaishankar highlighted progress in areas such as trade, defense cooperation, technology partnerships, energy security, and connectivity initiatives.

He noted that India's foreign policy increasingly seeks to balance economic interests, national security priorities, and global responsibilities.

BJP Highlights Diplomatic Achievements

The remarks come as the Bharatiya Janata Party marks 12 years of the Narendra Modi-led government.

Party leaders have frequently cited India's diplomatic outreach, international partnerships, and enhanced global profile as major achievements of the government's tenure.

Supporters argue that India's voice has become more influential in international decision-making forums and global policy discussions.

Opposition Calls for Balanced Assessment

Opposition parties acknowledged India's growing global visibility but argued that foreign policy achievements should also be evaluated alongside domestic economic and social challenges.

Some critics have called for a broader assessment of foreign policy outcomes, including trade balances, regional relations, and economic benefits derived from international partnerships.

Political analysts note that foreign policy remains one of the areas where the government has consistently sought to project a narrative of national strength and global leadership.

India’s Expanding Global Role

Experts believe India's role in global affairs is likely to continue expanding as the country strengthens its economic influence and strategic partnerships.

Issues such as supply chain resilience, technology cooperation, climate action, regional security, and international trade are expected to remain key priorities for Indian diplomacy in the coming years.

Jaishankar's remarks underscore the government's view that India's diplomatic transformation over the last 12 years has positioned the country as an increasingly important player in shaping global developments.
