Karnataka CM Buzz Intensifies Amid Siddaramaiah Exit Speculation

Karnataka leadership speculation deepens as Congress faces pressure

Political tension in Karnataka escalated sharply on Tuesday after statements from senior ministers reignited speculation about the future of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The remarks, suggesting that the ongoing “confusion” within the ruling Congress government would become clear “tomorrow,” triggered a fresh round of resignation rumours and intensified the spotlight on Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar.

The Congress leadership in Karnataka has repeatedly denied reports of a power struggle. Yet political circles in Bengaluru remain consumed by questions over whether a rotational chief minister formula, allegedly discussed during government formation in 2023, could now come into play.

The latest trigger came after a senior Karnataka minister told reporters that clarity on the leadership issue was expected shortly. Though the minister stopped short of confirming any leadership change, the comment was enough to send the opposition BJP into attack mode and spark fresh chatter across television debates and social media platforms.

What sparked the resignation buzz?

The Congress government in Karnataka has faced recurring rumours over a possible transition of power between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. The speculation dates back to the intense negotiations that followed the party’s Assembly election victory in May 2023.

At the time, both leaders were strong contenders for the chief minister’s post. Congress eventually chose Siddaramaiah as Chief Minister while Shivakumar was appointed Deputy Chief Minister and given key portfolios. Since then, reports have repeatedly claimed that a “power-sharing agreement” existed, though neither leader has publicly acknowledged such a deal.

The latest wave of rumours intensified after Shivakumar recently met top Congress leaders in Delhi. Political observers interpreted the meetings as a sign that discussions around Karnataka’s leadership could be active again behind closed doors.

Congress insiders, however, insist that the government remains stable.

“There is no question of instability. The Chief Minister is functioning normally and the government is focused on governance,” a senior Congress functionary said in Bengaluru.

Opposition attacks Congress over ‘internal war’

The opposition BJP wasted little time in targeting the ruling party. Karnataka BJP leaders accused Congress of prioritising internal politics over administration.

Several BJP spokespersons claimed that the uncertainty has weakened governance and distracted ministers from public issues such as infrastructure, inflation, and farmer distress.

“This government spends more time discussing chairs and positions than solving people’s problems,” a BJP MLA said during a press briefing in Bengaluru.

The Janata Dal (Secular) also joined the criticism, arguing that Congress had failed to provide stable leadership despite winning a strong mandate less than three years ago.

Siddaramaiah remains publicly confident

Despite the political noise, Siddaramaiah has continued to project confidence. During recent public appearances, the Chief Minister dismissed resignation rumours and maintained that his government would complete its full term.

His supporters within the Congress legislature party remain vocal. Many MLAs believe Siddaramaiah’s welfare-focused governance model has strengthened the party’s social base among backward classes, minorities, and rural voters.

Under his leadership, the Karnataka government launched several flagship guarantee schemes, including free bus travel for women, financial assistance programmes, and subsidised electricity initiatives. Congress leaders argue these schemes helped the party consolidate support across large sections of the electorate.

Political analysts say removing Siddaramaiah abruptly could create unrest among party workers and caste groups aligned with him.

DK Shivakumar factor remains crucial

Even as Siddaramaiah’s camp projects stability, D.K. Shivakumar continues to command enormous influence within Karnataka Congress politics.

Widely regarded as the party’s strongest organisational leader in the state, Shivakumar played a major role in rebuilding Congress after its 2019 collapse. His supporters argue that he deserves an opportunity to lead the state government.

The Deputy CM has so far maintained public restraint. He has neither openly challenged Siddaramaiah nor directly addressed speculation about a leadership transfer.

However, his silence has done little to calm political speculation.

“Whenever Congress leaders avoid giving direct answers, rumours naturally grow stronger,” said Bengaluru-based political analyst Raghavendra Kulkarni.

According to observers, the Congress high command now faces a delicate balancing act. A sudden leadership shift could anger Siddaramaiah loyalists, while denying Shivakumar greater authority for too long may frustrate his camp.

Congress high command under pressure

The developments come at a politically sensitive time for Congress nationally. Karnataka remains the party’s biggest governing success after setbacks in several other states.

Any sign of instability in Bengaluru risks damaging the party’s national image ahead of future Assembly and parliamentary battles.

Senior Congress leaders in Delhi are reportedly monitoring the situation closely. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge and former party chief Rahul Gandhi are believed to be engaged in consultations with Karnataka leaders.

Sources within the party suggest the leadership’s immediate priority is to prevent factionalism from escalating publicly.

“There may be internal discussions, but the central leadership will not allow a crisis to spiral out of control,” a Congress source said.

Public reaction and governance concerns

For ordinary citizens in Karnataka, the political uncertainty has raised concerns about administrative continuity.

Business groups in Bengaluru have called for policy stability, especially in sectors linked to technology investment and infrastructure development. Farmer organisations have also urged political leaders to focus on drought relief and rural issues instead of internal disputes.

On social media, hashtags linked to “Siddaramaiah resignation” and “DK Shivakumar CM” continued trending through the evening, reflecting the scale of public interest.

Political discussions around Karnataka often resonate beyond the state because of its economic importance and influence in national coalition politics. Readers in eastern India, including West Bengal, have closely followed the developments given Congress’ ongoing efforts to revive itself nationally.

What happens next?

All eyes are now on the Congress leadership’s next move and the expected clarification promised by Karnataka ministers.

Whether the statement results in a formal announcement, a political compromise, or simply another denial remains uncertain. For now, Congress continues to insist that the government is stable and functioning normally.

But with speculation refusing to die down, Karnataka’s political drama appears far from over.
