Khurram Shahzad, Mohammad Abbas Fined by ICC for Inappropriate Celebrations During Trinidad Test Against West Indies

Trinidad: Pakistan pacers Khurram Shahzad and Mohammad Abbas have been penalised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching the governing body's Code of Conduct during the Test match against the West Indies in Trinidad.

The sanctions were imposed after the two bowlers were found guilty of engaging in celebrations that the ICC deemed inappropriate following the dismissal of West Indies batters. Match officials concluded that the celebrations crossed the acceptable boundaries laid down under the ICC's Code of Conduct for players.

According to the ICC, both Shahzad and Abbas accepted the sanctions proposed by the match referee, eliminating the need for a formal disciplinary hearing.

Khurram Shahzad was cited for an aggressive send-off after claiming a wicket, while Mohammad Abbas was also found to have celebrated in a manner considered contrary to the spirit of the game. The ICC stressed that while players are entitled to celebrate wickets, actions that could intimidate, provoke or disrespect opponents are prohibited under its regulations.

As part of the disciplinary action, the players were fined a percentage of their match fees and received demerit points on their disciplinary records. The accumulation of demerit points over a specified period can lead to suspension from international matches if the threshold prescribed by the ICC is reached.

The incident occurred during a competitive Test in Trinidad, where Pakistan's pace attack played a crucial role against the West Indies. Both Shahzad and Abbas delivered disciplined spells, but their on-field conduct after key dismissals attracted the attention of the umpires and match referee.

The ICC has consistently emphasised maintaining the spirit of cricket, reminding players that emotional celebrations should not cross into behaviour that is confrontational or disrespectful. Similar sanctions have been imposed on players from various international teams in recent years for excessive appealing, aggressive send-offs and physical contact with opponents.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials have not publicly commented on the sanctions. With both players accepting the penalties, the matter is considered closed unless further disciplinary issues arise.

The episode serves as another reminder of the ICC's efforts to enforce standards of on-field behaviour while ensuring that competitive intensity does not undermine the game's spirit.
