Kolkata Metro Adds Extra Weekend Services Ahead of Durga Puja 2026: Check Line-Wise Details

Kolkata Metro is preparing for a significant rise in passenger traffic ahead of Durga Puja 2026 by increasing the number of weekend services on some of its busiest routes. The additional services are aimed at helping commuters manage the expected rush caused by pre-festival shopping, pandal visits and increased movement across the city.

According to the latest schedule, additional Metro services will operate on October 3, October 4, October 10 and October 11. These dates fall during the busy pre-Puja period when large numbers of people are expected to travel towards major commercial and shopping areas of Kolkata.

Areas such as New Market, Gariahat, Shyambazar and Howrah generally experience heavy footfall during the weeks leading up to Durga Puja. The increased Metro services are intended to provide commuters with more frequent trains and reduce waiting time at stations.

Additional Kolkata Metro Services on Saturdays

The Metro Railway has increased services on several lines for the two Saturdays — October 3 and October 10.

Blue Line

The Blue Line, operating between Dakshineswar and Kavi Subhash, will run 272 services, compared with the regular Saturday schedule of 252 services.

This represents an increase of 20 services and is expected to help passengers travelling through several major parts of Kolkata during the pre-Puja shopping rush.

Green Line

The Green Line, connecting Howrah Maidan and Salt Lake Sector V, will operate 236 services, compared with 212 services under the regular Saturday schedule.

The increase is expected to benefit commuters travelling between Howrah, central Kolkata and the Salt Lake area.

Yellow Line

The Yellow Line, operating between Noapara and Jai Hind Bimanbandar, will run 120 services, compared with 92 services on a normal Saturday.

The additional trains will provide greater connectivity towards the airport corridor during the busy period.

Purple and Orange Lines

The Purple Line will follow its standard Saturday operational schedule.

The Orange Line, meanwhile, will remain closed.

Sunday Kolkata Metro Schedule

Additional services will also be available on October 4 and October 11.

Blue Line

The Blue Line will operate 188 services, compared with 152 services on a regular Sunday.

Green Line

The Green Line will run 125 services, compared with 111 services under its normal Sunday schedule.

Yellow Line

The Yellow Line will continue with its normal schedule of 78 services.

However, direct services between Jai Hind Bimanbandar and Dakshineswar will be reduced from three to two.

The Purple Line and Orange Line will remain closed on these Sundays.

First and Last Train Timings Remain Unchanged

Despite the increase in the number of services, commuters will not see a change in the scheduled first and last train timings on the operational Metro lines.

The additional trains are primarily intended to increase service frequency during the periods when passenger demand is expected to be particularly high.

A Metro official said the additional trips are being introduced to reduce platform congestion, lower passenger waiting times and make commuting more convenient during the pre-festival period.

Why Kolkata Metro Is Increasing Services

Durga Puja is one of Kolkata's busiest annual festivals. In the weeks before the celebrations, thousands of people visit shopping centres, markets and commercial areas to purchase clothes, gifts and other items.

Early pandal-hopping also contributes to increased passenger movement across the city.

Metro services become particularly important during this period because they provide a faster alternative to road travel when traffic congestion increases.

The additional weekend services are therefore expected to help commuters travelling to some of Kolkata's busiest areas.

Kolkata Metro Saw Record Passenger Numbers During Durga Puja 2025

The decision to increase services comes after Kolkata Metro recorded exceptionally high passenger numbers during last year's Durga Puja period.

During the main festival days from Panchami to Navami in 2025, Kolkata Metro carried nearly 43.6 lakh passengers.

The highest single-day passenger count during that period was recorded on Maha Navami, when around 8.16 lakh passengers used the Metro.

Pre-Puja shopping also contributed significantly to Metro ridership. In September 2025, Kolkata Metro's total monthly ridership crossed 2.25 crore passengers, marking its highest monthly traffic at that time.

What Commuters Should Keep in Mind

Passengers travelling during the pre-Puja period should expect crowded stations and trains, particularly around popular shopping and entertainment destinations.

Commuters can plan their journeys in advance by checking the operational status of their Metro line and allowing additional time for station entry, security checks and interchange.

Passengers should also note that the additional services are being provided only on the specified dates and that the first and last train timings remain unchanged.
