Lionel Messi will start on the substitutes' bench when Argentina face Jordan in their final Group J fixture at the FIFA World Cup, with head coach Lionel Scaloni confirming the decision is part of a broader plan to keep his squad fresh for the knockout stage.

"Leo will start on the bench. He will come on a little later," Scaloni told reporters, dismissing speculation that the decision was fitness-related. The Argentina coach explained that squad rotation is essential during a demanding tournament and emphasised that every player deserves an opportunity to contribute.

Scaloni also rejected suggestions that fielding a changed lineup would weaken Argentina. He said the players set to start against Jordan have earned their chance and are capable of maintaining the team's high standards.

Jordan, making their FIFA World Cup debut, have already been eliminated after defeats to Austria and Algeria. While the Middle Eastern side has nothing but pride to play for, Scaloni expects them to remain disciplined and make life difficult for Argentina.

"They will probably defend deep and wait for opportunities on the counterattack. We are prepared to adapt if the game requires changes," the Argentina manager said.
