Nagpur, Maharashtra | Bureau Report
A fresh controversy has emerged in a sensitive student death case in Nagpur after it was found that an alleged suicide note linked to a NEET aspirant was not attached to the official case papers, raising serious questions about evidence handling and procedural accountability.
The incident has triggered an internal review by local police, even as the victim’s family has demanded clarity over how a key piece of evidence reportedly mentioned during initial proceedings appears to be missing from the official documentation.
The student, who was preparing for the highly competitive NEET examination under the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test framework, was found dead earlier this week. While the case was initially registered as an unnatural death, attention quickly shifted after claims emerged that a handwritten note had been recovered from the scene.
However, during subsequent verification of the case file, investigators reportedly discovered that no such document had been formally attached to the records, leading to confusion among officials and the family.
Family raises concerns over missing document
Speaking to reporters, a relative of the deceased questioned the discrepancy.
“We were told that a note was found, but when we asked for details during documentation, there was no clarity. This is deeply disturbing for us,” the family member said.
The family has also sought an independent review of the investigation, alleging that critical evidence may not have been properly recorded or preserved.
Legal experts say that if a suicide note was indeed recovered but not included in the official case diary or evidence register, it could raise procedural concerns.
Police initiate internal review
Senior police officials in Nagpur have acknowledged the discrepancy and confirmed that an internal inquiry has been initiated to verify the chain of custody of all materials collected from the scene.
A senior investigating officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the issue appears to be related to documentation rather than loss of evidence.
“We are verifying every step from the initial response team to the case file compilation. At this stage, it would be premature to draw conclusions,” the officer said.
Officials have also indicated that forensic and procedural records are being cross-checked to determine whether the document was ever formally logged into evidence.
Procedural gaps under scrutiny
The case has now drawn attention from legal and administrative circles, particularly regarding standard operating procedures in unnatural death investigations.
Experts point out that any handwritten note recovered from a sensitive scene must be:
Seized under proper procedure
Recorded in a seizure memo
Entered into the case diary
Sent for forensic examination if required
Former law enforcement officer and legal analyst Rajesh Kulkarni noted that even minor lapses can lead to serious questions.
“In such cases, documentation is everything. If a note is mentioned but not officially recorded, it creates a gap that must be explained clearly,” he said.
NEET pressure and student mental health concerns resurface
The incident has once again brought focus on the growing pressure faced by students preparing for medical entrance exams like NEET. Coaching hubs across India have seen increasing discussions around mental health, burnout, and academic stress.
Educators say the competitive environment often leaves little room for emotional support structures.
A senior educator in Maharashtra observed, “Every year we see rising stress levels. The system is extremely demanding, and many students struggle silently.”
Mental health professionals have also urged families and institutions to prioritize counselling and early intervention, especially during high-stakes examination cycles.
Public reaction and social media debate
The case has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with users questioning both the handling of the investigation and the broader pressures of India’s exam system.
Hashtags related to student mental health and NEET stress have been trending intermittently since the news broke.
While some users are demanding accountability from authorities, others are focusing on systemic reforms in education and coaching practices.
What happens next
Police have stated that the internal review will examine all procedural steps taken from the moment the case was registered. Officials are expected to submit a report within the next few days.
Meanwhile, the family has indicated that they may pursue legal options if discrepancies are not clarified satisfactorily.
The case remains under investigation, and authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation until official findings are released.
