Amid NEET backlash, govt under fire for Maharashtra TET 2026 paper leak: ‘Is there any exam left?’
The Maharashtra government has come under renewed scrutiny after the Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) 2026 was postponed following a suspected question paper leak, adding to growing concerns over the integrity of competitive examinations in India.
The development comes at a time when the examination ecosystem is already under intense public scrutiny due to the continuing debate surrounding NEET and other recruitment and entrance tests that have faced allegations of irregularities in recent years.
According to officials, the Maharashtra State Council of Examination (MSCE) decided to postpone the TET after law enforcement agencies reportedly uncovered documents suspected to be the examination paper during a raid in Bhiwandi, Thane district. The authorities have launched an investigation to determine the source of the leak and identify those responsible.
The examination was scheduled to be conducted for thousands of aspiring teachers across Maharashtra. Officials said a revised date for the test will be announced after the investigation progresses, and fresh admit cards will be issued to candidates.
The postponement sparked widespread outrage on social media, where candidates expressed frustration over repeated incidents involving competitive examinations. One of the most widely shared reactions read, "Is there any exam left that doesn't get leaked?", reflecting growing anxiety among aspirants who spend months preparing for high-stakes tests.
Opposition parties also criticised the state government, accusing it of failing to ensure the security and credibility of public examinations. They demanded strict action against those involved in the alleged leak and called for stronger safeguards to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Police have reportedly detained several suspects as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities are examining whether an organised network was involved in leaking the examination paper before the scheduled test.
The latest controversy has once again brought attention to the recurring challenge of paper leaks in recruitment and entrance examinations across the country. Education experts have argued that repeated disruptions not only undermine public trust in the examination process but also place immense emotional and financial pressure on candidates.
Meanwhile, the Maharashtra State Council of Examination has urged candidates to rely only on official announcements regarding the revised examination schedule and other updates.
As investigations continue, the incident is expected to intensify calls for stricter examination security measures and stronger legal action against those involved in paper leak cases.
