Nepal Rainfall: 27 Killed Across Country Since September 24 as Floods and Landslides Wreak Havoc

Kathmandu: At least 27 people have died across Nepal in incidents triggered by incessant rainfall since September 24, according to authorities. The heavy rain has caused widespread landslides, flooding and inundation across several parts of the country.

According to Nepal's Home Ministry, rain-induced disasters between September 24 and 28 also left four people missing and eight injured. The incidents affected 1,082 families, while 114 livestock were reported killed.

Landslides account for most deaths

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) said 304 landslide incidents were recorded during the period. These incidents claimed 20 lives, while four people remained missing and seven were injured.

Authorities also recorded 87 flood-related incidents, which resulted in four deaths. A further 151 incidents linked directly to heavy rainfall claimed three lives and injured one person.

The continuing rain has also caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure. As many as 227 houses were destroyed and another 142 were partially damaged, while floods and landslides damaged 31 bridges.

Low-pressure system behind heavy rain

Nepal's disaster management authority linked the spell of heavy rainfall to a low-pressure system that developed over the Bay of Bengal, bringing intense rainfall to different parts of the country.

The situation has also disrupted transport and essential services in several areas. Earlier reports said rising rivers and landslides had affected roads, electricity and telecommunications in parts of Nepal.

Manang landslide and avalanche add to concerns

On Sunday, a major landslide in Manang district sent debris into the Marsyangdi River and temporarily blocked parts of its flow, highlighting the continuing risks posed by unstable terrain and swollen rivers.

Separately, an avalanche struck the base camp of Himlung Himal, a 7,126-metre peak in northern Manang. Local workers were setting up tents for foreign climbers when the avalanche hit; the climbers were not present at the time. Reuters reported that 10 local workers were initially missing.

Authorities remain on alert

Nepal has faced repeated flooding and landslide disasters in recent weeks. Authorities have continued rescue, evacuation and relief operations in affected areas while monitoring rivers and vulnerable settlements.

The latest rainfall comes after devastating flooding in Nepal in August, which caused a much larger loss of life and widespread damage. Officials are now closely monitoring weather and river conditions as further rain could increase the risk of flash floods and landslides.
