New Delhi Railway Station Introduces Separate Entry and Exit Gates for Reserved and Unreserved Passengers
With passenger numbers rising during the Diwali and Chhath Puja festive season, Northern Railway has introduced separate entry and exit arrangements for reserved and unreserved passengers at New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS).
The new system is designed to regulate passenger movement, reduce congestion at busy access points and make it easier for travellers to reach their respective platforms. Passengers must now use designated gates according to their ticket category, while entry and exit routes are being operated separately.
Which Gates Should Reserved and General Passengers Use?
Northern Railway has introduced a colour-coded system to help passengers identify their designated entry points.
According to Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, Chief Public Relations Officer of Northern Railway:
Reserved passengers: Travellers holding Sleeper or AC reserved tickets for trains departing from platforms 1 to 15 must use Gate Nos. 8 and 11. These gates are marked in blue.
Unreserved passengers: General or unreserved ticket holders travelling from platforms 1 to 16 must use Gate No. 12, which is marked in yellow.
Passengers are advised to check the signboards at the station and follow the designated route for their ticket category.
Separate Entry and Exit Routes
The railway administration has also introduced one-way movement at the designated access points.
Passengers entering the station will not be allowed to use the same gates to exit. Similarly, designated exit gates are meant only for passengers leaving the station premises.
The arrangement is intended to prevent passengers moving in opposite directions from crowding the same access points. It is also expected to improve movement through the station's circulating areas, concourses, foot overbridges and platforms.
Handheld Devices to Reduce Ticket Queues
To make unreserved ticketing easier during the festive rush, railway staff are using handheld devices to issue tickets directly to passengers at the station.
This measure is intended to reduce dependence on booking counters and help manage queues, particularly when large numbers of passengers arrive at the station.
Platform Ticket Sales Temporarily Suspended
Northern Railway has also temporarily suspended the sale of platform tickets from November 3 to November 14, 2026, at New Delhi and several other stations.
The restriction applies to New Delhi, Delhi Junction, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Ghaziabad, Anand Vihar Terminal and Anand Vihar Halt.
Exemptions are available for people accompanying elderly, sick, specially abled and illiterate passengers, as well as women passengers who require assistance.
The measure is intended to limit non-essential movement on platforms and prioritise passengers travelling by train.
Signboards and Accessibility Arrangements
Signboards have been installed at important locations, including foot overbridges and entry and exit points, to guide passengers towards the correct gates.
Northern Railway has also retained accessibility arrangements near the designated gates. These include ramps and suitable pathways for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and passengers who require wheelchair assistance.
Passengers Advised to Check Gate Details Before Travelling
Passengers travelling from New Delhi Railway Station during the festive season should check their ticket category and platform information before reaching the station.
Reserved passengers travelling from platforms 1 to 15 should look for the blue-marked Gates 8 and 11, while unreserved passengers travelling from platforms 1 to 16 should use the yellow-marked Gate 12.
Following the new entry and exit arrangements is expected to help passengers avoid confusion and support smoother crowd management during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
