Opposition MPs stage 'Black Day' protest over alleged ‘police brutality’ against student protesters

Opposition Members of Parliament on Tuesday observed a 'Black Day' protest inside the Parliament complex, alleging "police brutality" against students during the recent Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP)-led demonstrations in New Delhi.

Leaders from several INDIA bloc parties assembled wearing black attire and holding placards, accusing the Centre of suppressing peaceful protests and demanding accountability for the police action.

MPs demand discussion in Parliament

The protesting MPs urged the government to allow a detailed discussion on the alleged use of force against student demonstrators.

Opposition leaders alleged that peaceful protesters were subjected to excessive police action during the 'Chalo Sansad' march and demanded answers from the Centre over the handling of the demonstrations.

Several MPs also called for an independent inquiry into the incidents that unfolded during the protest.

'Black Day' observed

As part of the symbolic protest, Opposition lawmakers wore black clothes and black armbands while raising slogans against the government before Parliament proceedings began.

The demonstration drew attention from other legislators and media gathered at the Parliament complex, adding to the political tension surrounding the Monsoon Session.

The protest follows days of heated exchanges between the Treasury and Opposition benches over the events at Jantar Mantar and the subsequent march towards Parliament.

Government defends police action

The Centre has defended the actions of Delhi Police, maintaining that security personnel acted in accordance with the law to maintain public order and prevent protesters from entering restricted areas around Parliament.

Government leaders have rejected allegations of targeting peaceful protesters, stating that police intervention became necessary after demonstrators attempted to breach security arrangements.

Delhi Police have also registered multiple FIRs in connection with clashes reported during the protests, with investigations continuing.

Political confrontation intensifies

The 'Black Day' protest is the latest in a series of demonstrations by Opposition parties over the handling of the CJP-led movement.

With Parliament continuing to witness repeated disruptions over the issue, the confrontation between the government and the Opposition is expected to remain one of the dominant themes of the Monsoon Session.
