Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official visit to Seychelles marked a significant step in India's efforts to deepen its strategic partnership with the island nation, with both countries announcing a range of initiatives spanning defence, maritime security, technology and development cooperation.
The visit reaffirmed India's commitment to the Indian Ocean Region under its 'Security and Growth for All in the Region' (SAGAR) vision, as New Delhi seeks to bolster ties with key maritime partners amid evolving regional security dynamics.
Four military advisers to boost defence cooperation
One of the major outcomes of the visit was India's decision to deploy four military advisers to Seychelles to assist in strengthening the country's defence capabilities.
The advisers will work closely with Seychelles' security forces in areas including maritime surveillance, operational planning, training and capacity building. The move is expected to enhance cooperation between the two countries in safeguarding the Indian Ocean against piracy, illegal fishing, drug trafficking and other transnational threats.
India to provide patrol vessels
India also announced support for Seychelles' maritime security by providing additional patrol vessels and expanding cooperation between the two navies and coast guards.
The patrol vessels are expected to improve Seychelles' ability to monitor its vast Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), conduct search-and-rescue missions and counter illegal maritime activities. India has previously supplied defence equipment and training assistance to the island nation as part of its long-standing security partnership.
Artificial Intelligence and digital cooperation
Technology emerged as another key pillar of the visit, with both countries agreeing to expand collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI), digital public infrastructure and e-governance.
India offered to share its expertise in digital transformation, including platforms developed under the Digital India initiative, while exploring opportunities for AI-based governance solutions, digital services and skill development in Seychelles.
The agreement reflects India's broader push to promote digital partnerships with countries across the Global South.
Development partnership strengthened
Apart from defence and technology, the two sides reviewed ongoing infrastructure and development projects supported by India in Seychelles.
These include cooperation in healthcare, education, renewable energy, capacity building and community development. India reiterated its commitment to assisting Seychelles through grants, concessional financing and technical expertise.
Both leaders also discussed expanding cooperation in climate resilience, disaster management and the blue economy—areas of particular importance for small island developing states.
Why the visit matters
Seychelles occupies a strategically important position in the western Indian Ocean, making it a crucial partner for India in ensuring maritime stability and secure sea lanes.
As geopolitical competition in the Indian Ocean intensifies, India has been strengthening defence and economic partnerships with island nations, including Seychelles, Mauritius, Maldives and Sri Lanka.
PM Modi's visit signals New Delhi's intent to remain a preferred security and development partner in the region while promoting sustainable growth, digital innovation and regional stability.
