Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the growing partnership between India and New Zealand by invoking the Māori concept of the 'Waka', describing it as a powerful symbol of the two nations' shared journey and collective aspirations.
Addressing members of the Indian diaspora and New Zealand dignitaries during his visit, Modi said the Waka represents cooperation, resilience and a common voyage towards a brighter future.
"Waka is a symbol of our shared journey," the Prime Minister said, highlighting the deepening friendship between India and New Zealand.
What Is a Waka?
A Waka is a traditional Māori canoe that holds immense cultural and historical significance in New Zealand. It symbolises unity, community and collective progress, values that Modi said resonate strongly with the evolving relationship between the two countries.
Drawing on the cultural symbolism, the Prime Minister noted that India and New Zealand are moving forward together while respecting each other's heritage and diversity.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
During his address, Modi emphasised that India and New Zealand share democratic values, multicultural societies and a commitment to peace and prosperity.
He said both countries have expanded cooperation in several sectors, including:
Trade and investment
Education
Agriculture
Technology and innovation
Renewable energy
People-to-people exchanges
The Prime Minister added that there remains significant potential to deepen collaboration across emerging sectors.
Diaspora Plays Key Role
Modi praised the Indian community in New Zealand for acting as a bridge between the two nations.
He acknowledged the contributions of the Indian diaspora in strengthening cultural understanding, business partnerships and educational exchanges.
The Prime Minister said the community continues to enhance India's image abroad while contributing to New Zealand's growth.
Shared Vision for the Indo-Pacific
The visit also focused on regional cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.
Both nations have reiterated their support for a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region governed by international law and mutual respect.
Officials indicated that discussions also covered maritime cooperation, economic resilience and global challenges.
Cultural Diplomacy Takes Centre Stage
By referring to the Māori tradition of the Waka, Modi highlighted the importance of cultural diplomacy in international relations.
The gesture was widely seen as recognition of New Zealand's indigenous heritage and an effort to strengthen people-to-people connections beyond political and economic engagement.
Looking Ahead
Prime Minister Modi's remarks reflected India's intention to elevate its partnership with New Zealand across multiple fronts.
As both countries seek stronger economic cooperation and closer strategic engagement, the symbolism of the Waka served as a reminder that enduring partnerships are built through shared values, mutual trust and a common vision for the future.
