Veteran actor and producer Radhika Sarathkumar has expressed disappointment over the chaotic scenes witnessed during the funeral of veteran filmmaker and actor K. Bhagyaraj, saying the solemn occasion was turned into a "circus."
In a strongly worded statement on social media, Radhika said funerals should be conducted with dignity and respect, adding that the disorder surrounding the last rites reflected poorly on public behaviour and event management.
'A funeral is not a spectacle'
Reacting to visuals from the funeral, Radhika said the atmosphere became chaotic due to overcrowding, pushing and a lack of discipline among those present.
She lamented that a farewell to a respected cinema personality should not resemble a public spectacle and urged people to respect the sanctity of such occasions.
The actor stressed that celebrities and their families deserve privacy and dignity while bidding farewell to their loved ones.
Appeal to the Tamil Nadu government
Radhika also urged the Vijay-led Tamil Nadu government to take steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
She called for better crowd-control measures, stronger security arrangements and clearer protocols for managing public attendance at funerals of prominent personalities.
According to Radhika, improved planning would help ensure that grieving families are not subjected to unnecessary chaos during emotionally difficult moments.
Public reactions
Her remarks have sparked discussions across social media, with many users agreeing that better crowd management is needed at high-profile funerals.
Several fans echoed her concerns, saying that mobile phones, selfies and jostling for photographs often overshadow the solemnity of such events.
Others called for stricter enforcement of security measures to allow family members, friends and colleagues to pay their final respects without disruption.
Debate over public decorum
The incident has reignited conversations about public behaviour during celebrity funerals in India, where large crowds and intense media attention often create logistical challenges.
Many observers believe that while public figures attract enormous admiration, maintaining decorum and respecting the privacy of bereaved families should remain a priority.
Radhika's comments have added momentum to calls for clearer guidelines to ensure that future state or public funerals are conducted in a more orderly and respectful manner.
