Rahul Gandhi leads march towards PM's residence, demands resignations over CJP crackdown: ‘Let's wake him up’

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday led an Opposition march towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence, demanding the resignation of those responsible for the alleged crackdown on the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) protest in New Delhi.

Addressing party workers and Opposition leaders before the march, Gandhi urged supporters to continue their protest, declaring, "Let's wake him up," in a sharp attack on the Centre over its handling of the demonstrations.

Opposition steps up pressure

The march came amid escalating political tensions following the police action during the CJP's 'Chalo Sansad' protest, which witnessed clashes between demonstrators and security personnel near Parliament.

Rahul Gandhi accused the government of suppressing peaceful dissent and called for accountability over the alleged use of force against students and protesters.

He also demanded the resignation of those responsible for ordering and overseeing the police action.

Protest march heads towards PM's residence

Congress MPs, leaders from INDIA bloc parties and supporters joined the march, raising slogans against the government as they proceeded towards the Prime Minister's official residence.

Security was heightened in central Delhi, with barricades and additional police personnel deployed along the proposed route to prevent protesters from entering high-security zones.

The march added to the ongoing political confrontation that has dominated the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Government defends police action

The Centre has defended the actions of Delhi Police, maintaining that security personnel acted in accordance with the law to protect public order and prevent protesters from breaching restricted areas around Parliament.

Delhi Police have registered multiple FIRs in connection with the violence reported during the protest and said investigations are continuing.

Government leaders have rejected allegations of suppressing democratic dissent, arguing that law enforcement agencies acted only after protesters attempted to violate security arrangements.

Political row intensifies

The issue has emerged as one of the biggest flashpoints of the Monsoon Session, with the Opposition repeatedly seeking discussions on the police response and demanding accountability from the government.

As protests continue inside and outside Parliament, the latest march led by Rahul Gandhi is expected to further intensify the political debate over the Centre's handling of the CJP demonstrations.
