Sonam Wangchuk Gets Big Political Backing Amid Hunger Strike: Here's Who Has Extended Support

Education reformer and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has received a wave of political support as his indefinite hunger strike continues at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, drawing national attention to his campaign.

Wangchuk, who is protesting over alleged examination irregularities and broader governance issues, has seen leaders from across the opposition rally behind him. However, while backing his cause, several of them have urged him to end the fast amid growing concerns about his health.

Who Has Backed Sonam Wangchuk?

According to reports, the following political leaders have publicly expressed solidarity with Wangchuk:

  • Arvind Kejriwal, former Delhi Chief Minister

  • Akhilesh Yadav, Samajwadi Party chief

  • Uddhav Thackeray, Shiv Sena (UBT) president

  • Aaditya Thackeray, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader

  • Mahua Moitra, Trinamool Congress MP

The leaders praised Wangchuk's commitment to public causes while expressing concern over his deteriorating health and urging him to prioritise his well-being.

Health Concerns Intensify

Wangchuk's hunger strike has entered its 17th day, with reports indicating that he has lost more than 8 kilograms since beginning the protest.

Doctors and supporters have voiced concern over his physical condition, while political leaders have appealed to him to withdraw the fast and continue the movement through other democratic means.

What Is Wangchuk Demanding?

The activist's protest centres on alleged irregularities in national examinations and demands greater accountability from the authorities. His campaign has resonated with students and youth groups across the country, particularly in the wake of controversies surrounding competitive examinations.

The hunger strike has also reignited discussions on education reforms, transparency in recruitment and examination systems, and governance.

Support Beyond Politics

Apart from political leaders, actor Omi Vaidya, best known for playing Chatur in the Bollywood film 3 Idiots, also appealed to the public to support Wangchuk, who inspired the character of "Phunsukh Wangdu" in the film. His message further amplified the campaign on social media.

What's Next?

As Wangchuk's fast continues, attention is shifting toward whether the government will formally respond to the demands raised during the protest.

For now, opposition parties continue to express solidarity with the activist while stressing that his health should not be put at further risk. With public support growing and political pressure mounting, the coming days are expected to be crucial for both the protest and any potential dialogue.
