Supreme Court Refuses to Restore Namaz at Bhojshala, Directs Friday Prayers at Alternate Site

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to restore namaz at the disputed Bhojshala complex in Dhar, Madhya Pradesh, and directed that Friday prayers continue at a nearby designated site instead.

The order came during the hearing of petitions concerning the centuries-old Bhojshala dispute, one of the most sensitive religious and archaeological matters in the country.

Supreme Court Upholds Existing Arrangement

The apex court refused to interfere with the present arrangement governing religious practices at the Bhojshala complex.

The bench observed that, for the time being, Friday prayers would continue at the alternate location already identified by the authorities, rather than being shifted back to the Bhojshala premises.

The matter remains under judicial consideration, and the court has not delivered a final verdict on the underlying dispute.

Background of the Bhojshala Dispute

Bhojshala, located in Dhar district, is regarded by many Hindus as a temple dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, while members of the Muslim community identify the structure as the Kamal Maula Mosque.

For decades, the site has been the subject of competing claims over its religious character and usage.

The dispute has frequently led to litigation and administrative arrangements aimed at balancing religious practices while maintaining law and order.

Friday Prayers to Continue Nearby

The Supreme Court's order means that Muslims seeking to offer Friday prayers will continue to do so at the nearby designated location rather than inside the Bhojshala complex.

The arrangement had been put in place by local authorities amid the ongoing legal proceedings.

The court did not disturb this interim mechanism.

ASI Survey and Ongoing Litigation

The Bhojshala dispute has also involved archaeological questions.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has carried out surveys and submitted findings before the courts as part of the legal process concerning the historical nature of the monument.

The outcome of the litigation will ultimately determine future rights and usage of the site.

Sensitive Issue

The Supreme Court emphasised the need to maintain peace and communal harmony while the case remains pending.

Authorities have been directed to ensure that the existing arrangements are implemented smoothly and that law and order is maintained in and around the disputed site.

Looking Ahead

With the Supreme Court declining to restore namaz at Bhojshala for now, the interim arrangement will remain in force until further judicial orders.

The final resolution of the long-standing dispute is expected to depend on the outcome of the pending legal proceedings and the evidence presented before the courts.
