Washington, DC: A reported disagreement between US President Donald Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick over India's tariffs on American goods has offered a glimpse into the administration's internal deliberations on trade policy.
According to reports detailing discussions within the administration, Trump grew frustrated during a conversation about tariff levels imposed by India on US products. The President reportedly accused officials of providing inaccurate figures, at one point telling Lutnick that he was being given "bullshit numbers" regarding India's tariff structure.
The reported exchange occurred amid broader efforts by the Trump administration to scrutinize trade relationships and push for what it considers more balanced market access for American businesses. India has frequently been a subject of discussion in Washington due to long-standing disagreements over tariffs, market barriers and trade regulations.
The dispute reportedly revolved around competing assessments of the effective tariff burden faced by US exporters in India. While administration officials presented one set of figures, Trump is said to have questioned their accuracy and demanded a clearer picture of the actual trade environment.
Trade relations between the United States and India have experienced both cooperation and friction over the years. While the two countries have significantly expanded strategic and economic ties, differences remain over tariffs, agricultural access, digital trade policies and regulatory standards.
Trump has long been critical of countries he believes impose disproportionately high tariffs on American products. During both his presidential campaigns and his time in office, he repeatedly cited India as an example of a nation with protective trade policies, though trade negotiations between the two countries have often produced gradual progress rather than major breakthroughs.
The revelation of the exchange with Lutnick highlights the importance the administration places on trade metrics when formulating policy. It also underscores Trump's tendency to challenge economic data presented by advisers when he believes it conflicts with his understanding of an issue.
Despite periodic disputes, India and the United States remain important economic partners. Bilateral trade has grown substantially over the past decade, and both governments have continued discussions aimed at resolving outstanding trade concerns while strengthening cooperation in sectors such as technology, defense and manufacturing.
Neither the White House nor the Commerce Department immediately commented on the reported exchange. However, the account has attracted attention because it illustrates the often-direct nature of policy discussions within the administration and the central role trade issues continue to play in US economic strategy.
The episode comes at a time when Washington is reassessing trade relationships with several major partners, with tariff levels and market access remaining key points of negotiation in discussions with countries around the world.
