Trump Changes Tune on Iran Deal, Warns US Could ‘Go Back to Shooting’ and Resume Bombings
US President Donald Trump has tempered optimism surrounding a proposed agreement with Iran, declaring that the deal is “not final” and warning that the United States could resume military action if Tehran fails to comply. The remarks come just days after Trump suggested a breakthrough in negotiations was close, highlighting the fragile nature of ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Just days after projecting confidence about a potential breakthrough with Iran, US President Donald Trump has adopted a tougher stance, warning that Washington could resume military strikes if negotiations fail or if Tehran does not meet American expectations.
Speaking on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France, Trump said the current understanding between the two sides remains incomplete and should not be viewed as a finalized agreement. He described the arrangement as a memorandum of understanding rather than a binding peace deal.
‘Deal Is Not Final’
Trump stressed that negotiations are still ongoing and cautioned against assuming that a lasting settlement has been reached.
“The memorandum of understanding is not final,” he said, adding that any long-term agreement would depend on Iran's future actions and compliance with negotiated terms.
The comments mark a notable shift from recent statements in which Trump suggested a deal was close and even announced the cancellation of planned military strikes because of progress in talks.
‘We’ll Go Back to Shooting’
In his strongest warning yet, Trump indicated that military action remains an option if the negotiations collapse.
“If I don't like it, we'll go back to shooting,” Trump said, while also warning that the US could resume bombing campaigns against Iranian targets if Tehran fails to “behave.”
The remarks underscore the uncertainty surrounding efforts to end months of conflict and reduce tensions in the Middle East.
A Deal Surrounded by Doubts
Confusion has surrounded the proposed agreement since Trump first claimed that Iran had approved a framework for peace talks and that a formal deal was imminent. Iranian officials, however, have repeatedly stated that no final agreement has yet been reached.
Earlier this month, Trump alternated between threatening fresh military action and expressing optimism that diplomacy would succeed, leading analysts to describe the negotiations as highly fluid.
What Is in the Proposed Agreement?
According to reports, the current framework includes:
A temporary extension of the ceasefire.
Continued negotiations over Iran's nuclear programme.
Discussions on sanctions relief.
Measures aimed at ensuring maritime security and keeping the Strait of Hormuz open.
However, several major issues remain unresolved, including Iran's nuclear activities, regional security concerns, and the role of Iranian-backed groups in the Middle East.
Global Attention on Next Steps
The latest comments from Trump have renewed uncertainty over whether diplomacy will ultimately prevail.
G7 leaders have broadly welcomed efforts to reduce tensions and avoid further escalation but continue to emphasize the need for a durable settlement that addresses concerns over Iran's nuclear ambitions and regional influence.
For now, the proposed agreement remains a work in progress. Trump's warning that the US could "go back to shooting" highlights how quickly the situation could shift if negotiations break down.
