Trump Officially Renames Artificial Intelligence to ‘Super Intelligence’ After Meeting Top AI Bosses

US President Donald Trump has directed the US government to replace the term “Artificial Intelligence” (AI) with “Super Intelligence” (SI) in official documents and communications.

Trump reiterated the terminology change after meeting some of the world's leading technology executives at the White House on September 29, where discussions focused on AI development, safety standards and the expansion of data-centre infrastructure.

Why is Trump calling AI ‘Super Intelligence’?

Trump first announced the terminology change during his address to the United Nations General Assembly on September 22.

He argued that the word “artificial” makes intelligence sound “fake” and said the technology should instead be called “super intelligence.” The US State Department subsequently instructed diplomats in its international organisations bureau to replace references to AI with SI in official communications.

Trump again promoted the new terminology during remarks on September 29, describing SI as “extreme intelligence,” “superior intelligence” and “supreme” intelligence before saying that “super intelligence” was the preferred term.

Trump meets top AI executives

The announcement followed a White House meeting with prominent technology leaders, including Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and OpenAI President Greg Brockman.

The meeting resulted in a voluntary agreement on AI safety practices. Participating companies committed to developing internal controls and working with independent auditors to assess whether their AI systems operate as intended and avoid unauthorised access to technical systems.

Trump described the agreement as “almost like a constitution” and called it “morally binding,” although it is a voluntary framework rather than a new legally enforceable AI regulation.

AI or SI: What changes?

The terminology change does not itself alter the underlying technology. “Artificial intelligence” remains the established technical term used globally, while “super intelligence” is the terminology Trump has directed US government agencies to adopt.

The administration's move also comes as the US seeks to maintain its position in the global AI race, particularly in competition with China. Trump has argued that the US should avoid policies that could slow technological development.

Trump has also said he plans to appoint a White House official to lead AI policy and is considering a 10-member board focused on AI safety.

A broader shift in US AI policy

The terminology change is part of a wider push by the Trump administration to promote rapid AI development while relying partly on industry-led safety measures.

The White House meeting brought together major AI companies at a time when concerns about the technology's safety, cybersecurity implications, energy consumption and impact on communities are growing.
