Samajwadi Party Wins Five Seats in UP MLC Elections

The Samajwadi Party recorded significant gains in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections, winning five of the 11 Teachers’ and Graduates’ constituencies contested in the state.

The BJP won the remaining six seats, maintaining its overall advantage. However, the SP’s victories in constituencies including Varanasi and Lucknow gave the opposition party a boost months before the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

The results were announced following counting that began on October 27 and continued into October 28. The elections had taken place on October 23, 2026.

Which Five Seats Did the Samajwadi Party Win?

The SP won the following five constituencies:

ConstituencyWinning CandidateResultVaranasi Teachers’Lal Bihari YadavSP retained the seatVaranasi Graduates’Ashutosh SinhaSP retained the seatAgra-Aligarh Teachers’Akash AgarwalSP victoryAllahabad-Jhansi Graduates’Man Singh YadavSP retained the seatLucknow Graduates’Kanti SinghSP gained the seat from BJP

These victories strengthened the SP’s position in the Legislative Council and helped it expand its presence in constituencies traditionally contested by established political parties.

Varanasi Becomes a Key Political Battleground

One of the most politically significant developments was the SP’s performance in Varanasi, the Lok Sabha constituency represented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

SP candidate Lal Bihari Yadav won the Varanasi Teachers’ constituency, securing 11,612 votes and retaining the seat. Ashutosh Sinha also won the Varanasi Graduates’ constituency.

The results gave the SP a double victory in Varanasi and provided the party with an opportunity to highlight its performance in a constituency closely associated with the Prime Minister.

SP president Akhilesh Yadav had raised allegations about delays and irregularities during the counting process in Varanasi. These were allegations made by the party and should not be treated as established findings of electoral misconduct.

SP Wins Lucknow Graduates’ Seat

The SP also made an important gain in Lucknow, where its candidate Kanti Singh defeated BJP candidate Avneesh Kumar Singh in the Graduates’ constituency.

The seat had been held by the BJP. The victory therefore represented a gain for the SP and a setback for the ruling party in the state capital.

The outcome added to the opposition party’s momentum as political parties prepare for the 2027 Assembly elections.

BJP Retains Six Seats

Despite the SP’s gains, the BJP remained the largest winner in the 11-seat contest, securing six constituencies.

The BJP’s victories included:

  • Meerut Graduates’: Dinesh Kumar Goyal

  • Agra Graduates’: Manvendra Pratap Singh

  • Bareilly-Moradabad Teachers’: Hari Singh Dhillon

  • Lucknow Teachers’: Umesh Dwivedi

  • Meerut Teachers’: Shrichand Sharma

  • Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers’: Dhruv Kumar Tripathi

The BJP’s six-seat tally matched its performance in the previous election for these constituencies in 2020. However, losing the Lucknow Graduates’ seat and facing SP victories in Varanasi remained important political developments.

What Do the Results Mean for Akhilesh Yadav?

The results give Akhilesh Yadav’s party a boost ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

The SP can point to its victories in Varanasi and Lucknow as evidence that it remains competitive against the BJP. The party’s five-seat tally also represents an increase from the three seats it held among these constituencies before the election.

However, the BJP still won six of the 11 seats. The MLC results also involve a different electorate from Assembly elections, so they cannot be treated as a direct prediction of the 2027 outcome.

Counting Disputes and Allegations

The counting process in some constituencies was accompanied by political tension.

SP leaders alleged irregularities and delays in the counting process in Varanasi and other locations. In Gorakhpur, SP candidate Sanjayan Tripathi reportedly boycotted the counting, alleging irregularities.

BJP supporters also raised concerns about the counting process in some areas. These competing allegations formed part of the political dispute surrounding the results; they do not, by themselves, establish that the election outcome was manipulated.

Voter Turnout and Election Details

The elections covered 11 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council seats, comprising five Graduates’ constituencies and six Teachers’ constituencies.

Voting took place on October 23, with counting beginning on October 27. A total of 152 candidates were reported to be in the contest.

These constituencies represent specific groups of voters, including registered graduates and teachers, rather than the general electorate. Their results are therefore an important measure of political support within those groups but do not necessarily reflect statewide voter preferences.

The SP’s victories in Varanasi and Lucknow were particularly significant, giving Akhilesh Yadav’s party a boost ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls.
