Yogi Govt Hands Over Akhilesh Yadav’s ‘Dream Project’ JPNIC to Private Firms for 30 Years

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved a proposal to hand over the Jai Prakash Narayan International Centre (JPNIC) in Lucknow’s Gomti Nagar to private firms on a 30-year lease.

The decision, approved at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has drawn criticism from the Opposition Samajwadi Party, which has been closely associated with the project since its construction began during the tenure of former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

Two private firms to operate JPNIC

According to state Finance Minister Suresh Khanna, the Cabinet approved the proposal submitted by the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA).

Under the arrangement, Brindavan Bottlers Pvt Ltd and Rockwood Hotels and Resorts Pvt Ltd have been given a 30-year lease to complete and operate the centre.

The decision effectively brings private firms into the development and management of the major public project located in one of Lucknow’s prime areas.

What will the JPNIC house?

The Jai Prakash Narayan International Centre was envisioned as a major cultural and public facility.

According to the state government's plan, the centre will include several facilities, including a museum, cultural spaces, sports facilities and recreational areas.

It will also have a multi-level parking facility, adding to its intended role as a major public complex in Gomti Nagar.

The project was designed to commemorate socialist leader Jayaprakash Narayan, whose political legacy has particular significance for the Samajwadi Party.

Akhilesh Yadav’s association with the project

The JPNIC project was developed during the tenure of former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

For the Samajwadi Party, the centre has been an important symbol associated with the party's political and ideological legacy.

The project has also been at the centre of political disagreements between the BJP government and the Samajwadi Party.
