AAP Sweeps Punjab Civic Polls, Leads Big in Mohali

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party registered a commanding performance in Punjab’s civic body elections on Friday, taking decisive leads in Mohali and several other municipalities across the state. The Congress lagged behind in most urban centres, while the BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal struggled to make significant gains, turning the results into a major political endorsement for Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s government.

AAP Tightens Grip on Punjab Urban Politics

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) delivered a strong political statement on Friday as counting trends from Punjab’s civic body elections showed the party surging ahead in Mohali and several other municipalities across the state.

Early trends released by the State Election Commission indicated that AAP candidates had established comfortable leads in multiple wards across Mohali Municipal Corporation, while the party also performed strongly in Ludhiana, Patiala, Sangrur, Bathinda and Moga.

The results are being viewed as the biggest urban electoral endorsement for the Bhagwant Mann-led government since the party’s sweeping Assembly election victory in 2022.

Party workers gathered outside counting centres from early morning, waving yellow flags and raising slogans in support of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal.

Senior AAP leaders claimed the civic poll outcome reflected public approval of the government’s governance model, anti-corruption campaign and welfare initiatives.

“This is the people’s answer to opposition propaganda. Punjab’s urban voters have shown faith in honest politics,” Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema told reporters in Chandigarh.

Congress Fails to Recover Lost Ground

The Congress emerged a distant second in many municipalities, according to initial counting trends. Despite attempts to revive its urban base, the party struggled to consolidate anti-incumbency sentiment against the state government.

Congress leaders admitted privately that organisational weaknesses and factionalism had hurt the party’s performance in several districts.

In Mohali, considered one of Punjab’s most politically sensitive urban centres due to its proximity to Chandigarh, Congress candidates were trailing in a majority of wards by midday.

The BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal also failed to mount a serious challenge in several civic bodies.

Political observers said the results highlighted the continuing fragmentation of Punjab’s opposition space.

“Urban Punjab appears firmly aligned with AAP at the moment. The opposition vote is split among Congress, BJP and Akali Dal,” said Chandigarh-based political analyst Professor Maninder Singh.

Why Mohali Matters Politically

Mohali has emerged as one of Punjab’s fastest-growing urban hubs over the past decade. With major IT parks, real estate expansion and growing middle-class voters, the city carries outsized political significance.

AAP’s strong performance in Mohali is likely to be interpreted as a signal that the party continues to enjoy support among urban professionals and younger voters.

Several high-profile wards witnessed close contests, particularly in areas where infrastructure, traffic congestion and property taxation became major campaign issues.

Election officials said voter turnout remained moderate but steady during polling earlier this week. Women voters and first-time urban voters participated in significant numbers.

Security was tightened around counting centres across Punjab, with police personnel deployed outside municipal offices and district headquarters to prevent clashes between rival party workers.

AAP’s Campaign Strategy Pays Off

AAP’s campaign focused heavily on local governance issues rather than national politics.

The party highlighted:

  • Road repair and sanitation projects

  • Anti-drug measures

  • Free electricity schemes

  • Improvements in government schools and mohalla clinics

  • Digital governance initiatives in municipalities

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann personally campaigned in several towns during the final phase of campaigning.

Party insiders said AAP’s booth-level organisation and volunteer network played a decisive role in mobilising voters.

The Congress, meanwhile, attempted to corner the government over unemployment and law-and-order concerns but failed to convert those issues into a significant urban electoral swing.

Opposition Questions Administrative Fairness

Even as counting continued, opposition parties raised allegations regarding misuse of administrative machinery during campaigning.

Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring alleged that local officials favoured ruling party candidates in some constituencies.

AAP leaders rejected the accusations and accused the opposition of attempting to discredit the verdict before final results were declared.

The Punjab State Election Commission said counting was proceeding peacefully under tight monitoring.

“We have ensured transparent counting procedures across all centres,” a senior election official said.

National Political Implications

The civic body results carry importance beyond Punjab.

For AAP, the outcome strengthens the party’s narrative that it remains electorally relevant despite setbacks in some other states. The strong urban performance could also help the party build momentum ahead of future Assembly and parliamentary contests.

Political analysts believe the results will boost the confidence of AAP leadership as the party seeks to expand its footprint nationally.

The Congress, on the other hand, faces renewed pressure to rebuild its organisation in Punjab — once considered one of its strongest states.

The BJP’s limited gains underline the challenges the party continues to face in Punjab’s regional political landscape despite attempts to increase its urban presence after the farmers’ protest movement reshaped state politics.

Public Mood Reflects Desire for Local Governance

Many voters said civic issues influenced their decisions more than larger ideological debates.

In Mohali, residents pointed to waste management, drainage, traffic bottlenecks and urban planning as key concerns.

“We voted for whoever we felt would improve daily civic services,” said Rajiv Mehta, a resident of Phase 7 in Mohali.

Shopkeepers and small business owners also expressed expectations that newly elected councillors would focus on infrastructure and commercial development.

The elections saw active participation from independent candidates as well, though most struggled against the larger party machinery of AAP and Congress.

What Happens Next

Final ward-wise results are expected by late evening, after which the process of selecting mayors and municipal leadership teams will begin.

AAP leaders are expected to hold victory celebrations in Chandigarh and across Punjab if the trends translate into official victories.

The results are likely to shape Punjab’s political discourse over the coming months, particularly as parties begin preparing strategies for the next round of major elections.

For now, however, the message from Punjab’s urban electorate appears clear: the Aam Aadmi Party remains the dominant political force in the state’s municipal landscape.
