All deserving individuals will get bank loans on time: Nirmala Sitharaman
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has assured that all deserving individuals seeking financial assistance will receive bank loans in a timely manner, stressing the government's commitment to improving access to institutional credit across the country.
Addressing a gathering during a review of banking and financial inclusion initiatives, Sitharaman said banks must ensure that eligible applicants are not subjected to unnecessary delays or procedural hurdles while availing loans under various government schemes.
The Finance Minister emphasized that timely credit plays a crucial role in promoting entrepreneurship, supporting small businesses and generating employment.
Focus on faster credit delivery
Sitharaman urged banks to strengthen their loan processing mechanisms so that eligible beneficiaries, including farmers, self-help groups, women entrepreneurs, small business owners and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), receive financial assistance without avoidable delays.
She said financial institutions should focus on improving efficiency while maintaining prudent lending practices and ensuring transparency in the approval process.
The minister reiterated that the objective is to make formal credit more accessible to people who genuinely require financial support for productive activities.
Government's push for financial inclusion
The Centre has been promoting financial inclusion through several initiatives aimed at expanding banking services and increasing access to affordable credit. Schemes supporting MSMEs, agriculture, startups and self-employment have been central to the government's strategy of boosting economic growth and job creation.
Sitharaman noted that banks play a critical role in implementing these initiatives and should proactively identify eligible beneficiaries to ensure that government programmes achieve their intended impact.
Banks urged to support economic growth
The Finance Minister also called upon banks to continue supporting productive sectors of the economy by extending credit responsibly while maintaining asset quality.
She said easier access to institutional finance would encourage entrepreneurship, strengthen local businesses and contribute to India's broader economic development goals.
Banking officials were also encouraged to leverage digital technologies to improve customer service, simplify documentation and reduce loan processing time.
Continued emphasis on inclusive banking
Sitharaman reiterated that the government remains committed to expanding financial inclusion and ensuring that every deserving applicant has access to timely credit through the formal banking system.
Her remarks come as the government continues to encourage banks to improve credit flow to priority sectors while supporting inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
