Arvind Kejriwal Detained Outside His Residence

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was detained by Delhi Police on Saturday, October 10, 2026, while marching towards Jantar Mantar to participate in a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

According to a report by Press Trust of India (PTI) published by ThePrint, Kejriwal was detained outside his residence in the Lodhi Estate area of New Delhi. He had announced his intention to join the demonstration, which was organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) to demand the CEC’s resignation over allegations concerning electoral rolls and alleged “vote theft”.

The detention took place amid a wider security operation to prevent the planned gathering at Jantar Mantar. Police had deployed personnel across central Delhi, established barricades and restricted access to several areas ahead of the demonstration.

Kejriwal had criticised the security restrictions earlier in the day, describing the situation as worse than the Emergency. His detention added another prominent Opposition leader to the list of politicians and activists stopped by police while attempting to join the protest.

Sanjay Singh and Other AAP Leaders Also Detained

Several senior AAP leaders were detained alongside Kejriwal as they attempted to proceed towards Jantar Mantar.

Those detained included Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, Delhi AAP chief Saurabh Bharadwaj, MLA Kuldeep Kumar and the party’s national media in-charge, Anurag Dhanda. Senior AAP leader Gopal Rai was also detained while protesting at the party office, according to PTI reporting.

Videos and reports from the scene showed police personnel taking Kejriwal towards a police bus as AAP workers gathered around him. PTI reported that party leaders and supporters tried to hold on to Kejriwal and prevent police from taking him away.

AAP leaders criticised the action and questioned the restrictions imposed on people seeking to participate in the demonstration.

Atishi, a senior AAP leader, condemned Kejriwal’s detention in a post on X and linked the action to his demand for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.

The detentions occurred as police attempted to prevent demonstrators from reaching the planned protest venue. The available reports did not establish that the detentions themselves resolved the underlying allegations concerning electoral irregularities.

Kejriwal Calls for Protests Wherever People Are Stopped

Before being detained, Kejriwal appealed to young people across the country to join the demonstration and raise concerns about alleged electoral manipulation.

He urged protesters to begin demonstrations wherever police prevented them from proceeding, saying that the entire country could become Jantar Mantar if people were stopped from reaching the designated venue.

Kejriwal also accused the BJP-led government of attempting to suppress the issue of alleged vote theft. He said the detention of CJP leaders and restrictions on protesters would not prevent people from raising questions about electoral fairness.

The AAP leader had announced a day earlier that he and members of his family would attend the protest. He encouraged young people to participate in the demonstration, which was intended to put pressure on the Election Commission over voter-list revisions.

Following his detention, Kejriwal continued to raise slogans demanding the CEC’s resignation. His remarks positioned the protest as part of a wider Opposition campaign calling for greater accountability in the electoral process.

These statements reflect Kejriwal’s political position. Allegations of electoral manipulation remain contested, and their validity depends on evidence and findings from appropriate authorities.

Why Was the CJP Protest Organised?

The demonstration was organised by the Cockroach Janta Party, a youth-led movement demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The protest focused on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and allegations that changes to voter lists had unfairly affected eligible voters. Critics of the exercise have questioned the scale of deletions and their possible impact on election results.

The movement had planned to bring thousands of demonstrators to Jantar Mantar, a designated protest site in central Delhi. Its demands included accountability over the voter-list revision process and action concerning alleged electoral irregularities.

The controversy intensified following reports about disagreements among election officials over aspects of voter-list revisions. Opposition parties have argued that the process requires greater transparency and scrutiny.

The Election Commission and the BJP have rejected allegations of deliberate manipulation, maintaining that the revisions are part of the process of verifying voter information and improving electoral-roll accuracy.

The dispute has consequently become a wider political confrontation involving the government, Opposition parties and the country’s electoral institutions. The allegations raised by protesters have not been established simply by the demonstrations or the political statements surrounding them.

Delhi Police Imposes Extensive Security Restrictions

Delhi Police introduced extensive security measures ahead of the proposed CJP demonstration. Thousands of police and paramilitary personnel were deployed across the capital, while barricades and checkpoints were established along major roads and routes leading to Jantar Mantar.

Reuters reported that authorities detained more than 2,000 people in Delhi during the operation to prevent the planned gathering. The report also described restrictions affecting transport and access to parts of central Delhi, including the closure of several metro stations and markets and a suspension of mobile internet services in the central business district.

The security operation affected not only CJP organisers but also students, activists, journalists and Opposition politicians seeking to join the protest.

Police had denied permission for the proposed demonstration, citing concerns related to the arrangements for the gathering. Despite the restrictions, smaller protests took place at different locations across the capital.

The scale of the security response prompted criticism from Opposition leaders, who argued that people should be able to express their concerns about electoral fairness. Authorities, meanwhile, sought to prevent an unauthorised gathering at the proposed venue.

Other Opposition Leaders Detained Across Delhi

Kejriwal was not the only prominent Opposition figure detained during the October 10 crackdown.

Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was detained along with several Trinamool Congress leaders after staging a sit-in in central Delhi. Former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and other Opposition politicians were also reported to have been detained while attempting to join or support demonstrations.

The detentions occurred at different locations, including outside political leaders’ residences and near offices where demonstrations had been organised. Student groups and activists were also stopped as they tried to reach Jantar Mantar.

The range of detentions demonstrated how widely the security operation extended beyond the original protest organisers. Opposition leaders criticised the restrictions, while the authorities maintained security measures around the planned gathering.

The incident has placed renewed attention on the balance between public-order restrictions and the right to peaceful assembly. The legality and circumstances of individual detentions must be assessed on their own facts rather than inferred from the broader political dispute.

What Happens Next?

Kejriwal’s detention has intensified the political debate over the CJP demonstration and the allegations concerning electoral rolls.

The AAP has criticised the police action, while Kejriwal has called on people to continue raising their concerns about alleged vote theft. The CJP movement has also said it intends to continue its campaign demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.

The central issue remains disputed. Opposition parties and activists are demanding greater scrutiny of the electoral-roll revision process, while the Election Commission and the BJP deny allegations of deliberate wrongdoing.

Further developments will depend on the course of the protests, responses from the authorities and any evidence or institutional findings concerning the electoral allegations.

Conclusion

Arvind Kejriwal was detained outside his Lodhi Estate residence while marching towards Jantar Mantar to join the CJP protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Several AAP leaders were detained alongside him as Delhi Police enforced extensive security restrictions to prevent the planned gathering.

Kejriwal criticised the crackdown and called on people to protest wherever they were stopped. The demonstration centred on allegations concerning electoral-roll revisions and demands for the CEC’s resignation, claims that remain contested by the Election Commission and the BJP.

The detentions have added to the political dispute over electoral fairness and the handling of public demonstrations in the national capital.
