Centre to prioritise Kochi-like Water Metro in Goa, says Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal

The Centre is set to prioritise the development of a Water Metro system in Goa, drawing inspiration from the successful Kochi Water Metro, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal announced.

Speaking during an event, Sonowal said the proposed project would form part of the government's broader push to modernise inland water transport and promote sustainable mobility in coastal cities.

"The Union government will prioritise a Kochi-like Water Metro for Goa," Sonowal said, highlighting the potential of waterways to ease road congestion while enhancing connectivity.

Inspired by Kochi's success

The proposed Goa Water Metro is expected to replicate key features of the Kochi Water Metro, India's first integrated electric water transport system. The project has been widely praised for providing environmentally friendly public transport while connecting islands and urban centres through electric ferries.

Officials believe Goa's extensive network of rivers, estuaries and backwaters makes it well-suited for a similar transport model.

Boost for tourism and connectivity

The minister said the Water Metro would not only improve daily commuting but also strengthen Goa's tourism infrastructure by offering faster and cleaner transport across the state's waterways.

The project is expected to reduce dependence on road transport, lower carbon emissions and provide an alternative mode of travel for both residents and visitors.

Experts have also pointed out that an efficient water-based transport network could improve connectivity between key tourist destinations and urban centres while reducing traffic congestion.

Focus on sustainable transport

The proposed initiative aligns with the Centre's broader vision of expanding inland water transport under the Maritime India Vision and promoting green mobility solutions.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has been encouraging states to utilise navigable waterways for passenger transport, cargo movement and tourism, with several projects currently under various stages of planning and implementation.

Next steps

While Sonowal confirmed that the Goa Water Metro has been prioritised, detailed project reports, timelines and funding mechanisms are expected to be finalised in consultation with the Goa government and other stakeholders.

If implemented, the project would mark another major milestone in India's efforts to expand sustainable water-based public transport, building on the success of the Kochi Water Metro and reinforcing the country's focus on environmentally friendly urban mobility.
