Christa Pike’s Botched Execution: What Happens to Gary Sutton as Tennessee Scraps All 2026 Executions?
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has halted all remaining executions in 2026 after death-row inmate Christa Pike survived a failed lethal-injection attempt on September 30. Gary Wayne Sutton, whose execution had been scheduled for December 3, is therefore no longer expected to be executed on that date while the state reviews its execution procedures. The Tennessee Supreme Court had reset Sutton’s execution date in September 2025.

Tennessee halts remaining 2026 executions
Tennessee has paused its remaining executions for 2026 after the state's attempt to execute death-row inmate Christa Pike failed on September 30.
Pike survived after officials administered two doses of the lethal-injection drug pentobarbital. She was subsequently taken to hospital, prompting Governor Bill Lee to halt the state's remaining executions for the year and order an independent review of what happened.
The decision directly affects Gary Wayne Sutton, whose execution had been scheduled for December 3, 2026.
What happens to Gary Sutton?
Sutton's December 3 execution is now on hold as a result of the governor's decision to suspend the remaining executions for 2026.
The Tennessee Supreme Court had formally reset Sutton's execution date to December 3, 2026, in an order dated September 30, 2025. The order followed an earlier reprieve issued by Governor Lee in 2022 and a broader pause in executions while Tennessee revised its lethal-injection procedures.
The latest suspension does not mean Sutton's death sentence has been overturned. Rather, the scheduled execution cannot proceed while the state's 2026 executions remain suspended.
Why did Tennessee stop executions?
The decision followed the unprecedented failure of Pike's execution.
According to the Associated Press, officials administered two doses of pentobarbital during the September 30 procedure, but Pike remained alive. Tennessee's execution protocol did not specify what officials should do if an inmate survived after the second dose. Governor Lee subsequently ordered a third-party investigation into the incident.
The failure has also prompted questions about the state's execution procedures and their implementation.
Who is Gary Wayne Sutton?
Sutton has been on Tennessee's death row for decades. He was convicted in connection with the 1992 killings of Tommy Griffin and Connie Branam in Blount County.
According to the United Methodist News report, Sutton and his uncle James Dellinger were convicted in 1996 in the shooting death of Griffin. They had previously been convicted in the death of Griffin's sister, Branam. Dellinger died in prison in 2023.
Sutton's execution had originally been scheduled for October 6, 2022, before Governor Lee issued a reprieve. The Tennessee Supreme Court later reset it for December 3, 2026.
What could happen next?
The immediate issue is the state-ordered review of the failed Pike execution. Depending on its findings and any subsequent legal or administrative action, Tennessee could revise its execution procedures before setting or carrying out another execution.
For Sutton, the December 3 date is therefore no longer proceeding under the current suspension. Any future execution would require a new date or further court action after the suspension and review process.
The Death Penalty Information Center lists Sutton's December 3 warrant as an active 2026 execution date in its latest available database, while noting that the database was last updated before the Pike-related developments.
