Why Was Lil Durk’s Racketeering Trial Pushed to 2027? Court Cites Case Complexity in Latest Ruling
Rapper Lil Durk’s second federal trial has been postponed from October 5, 2026, to August 30, 2027. A US federal judge cited the unusual complexity of the case, the large volume of evidence and newly added charges as reasons for granting the defence request for more preparation time. The delay concerns racketeering-related charges that were separated from the case in which Durk was acquitted in September.

Lil Durk’s second federal trial moved to 2027
Chicago rapper Lil Durk, whose legal name is Durk Banks, will now face his remaining federal case in August 2027 after a judge postponed his racketeering trial.
US District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald signed an order moving the trial from its earlier October 5, 2026 date to August 30, 2027, at 8:30 a.m. The defence requested the delay, while prosecutors did not object.
The case involves charges including murder in aid of racketeering (VICAR) and a related firearms charge.
Why was the trial delayed?
The court cited the “unusual complexity” of the prosecution, along with the amount of evidence that lawyers on both sides need to review.
According to the latest ruling, the case involves multiple defendants, extensive allegations and a substantial volume of material, including digital evidence, investigative reports and witness-related material.
Defence lawyers argued that proceeding with the earlier trial date would not give them sufficient time to investigate the allegations, review evidence and prepare their cases.
The request came after prosecutors filed a fourth superseding indictment, adding new charges shortly before the previously scheduled trial.
What are the charges against Lil Durk?
The remaining federal case alleges that Durk led what prosecutors describe as a criminal organisation known as the “Banks Gang Enterprise.” The latest indictment includes a VICAR murder charge.
The racketeering allegations were separated from Durk's earlier federal case after the government added racketeering counts. Judge Fitzgerald ordered that those allegations be tried separately.
Importantly, these charges remain allegations. Durk has pleaded not guilty.
Durk was acquitted in his first federal trial
The postponement comes shortly after a federal jury in Los Angeles acquitted Durk on all charges in his first trial on September 11, 2026.
That case concerned allegations that he arranged a 2022 murder-for-hire attack targeting rapper Quando Rondo. Rondo survived the shooting, but his cousin Saviay’a Robinson was killed.
Durk was found not guilty of conspiracy, stalking-related charges and murder-for-hire charges.
However, the acquittal did not end his federal legal proceedings because the separate racketeering-related case remains pending.
What happens next?
Before the new August 2027 trial date, Durk is scheduled to return to federal court on November 4, 2026, for a bond-review hearing. His lawyers are seeking his release while he awaits the second trial.
The defence is also expected to challenge the remaining case. The legal significance of Durk's recent acquittal for the separate racketeering prosecution is likely to be considered in further proceedings.
For now, the judge's order means the remaining federal trial is scheduled for August 30, 2027, nearly 11 months after the previous October 2026 date.
