‘Govt Invited Me, Showed SC Order’: CJP’s Saurav Das Says No Written Guarantee Yet on Withdrawal of Students’ FIRs

New Delhi: Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leader Saurav Das has said that while the government invited him for discussions and referred to a Supreme Court order, it has not yet provided a written guarantee on withdrawing FIRs registered against students following the recent protests.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Das said officials briefed him on the government's position and showed him the apex court's order related to the issue. However, he stressed that the organisation is awaiting a formal written commitment before accepting that the matter has been settled.

"The government invited me and showed the Supreme Court order, but we have not received any written guarantee on the withdrawal of students' FIRs," Das said.

The issue has emerged as one of the key demands raised by the CJP after the nationwide student protests over alleged examination irregularities and education reforms. The organisation has repeatedly sought the withdrawal of criminal cases against students, arguing that peaceful protesters should not face legal action.

According to Das, verbal assurances alone are insufficient given the number of students affected. He said the CJP wants a clear written communication outlining the government's position and the process through which the FIRs, if applicable, would be reviewed or withdrawn in accordance with the law.

Government representatives have maintained that discussions with stakeholders are ongoing and that any decision regarding criminal cases would be taken in line with judicial directions and established legal procedures. Officials have not publicly confirmed whether a written assurance will be issued.

The development comes amid continued negotiations between the government and student representatives following weeks of demonstrations that drew national attention. While both sides have indicated a willingness to engage in dialogue, several issues—including legal action against protesters and broader examination reforms—remain unresolved.

Legal experts note that the withdrawal of FIRs generally requires adherence to statutory procedures and, depending on the nature of the offences, may also require approval from the courts. They caution that any such decision must follow the due process prescribed under criminal law.

The CJP has said it will continue to monitor the government's response and has reiterated that the fate of students facing criminal cases remains one of its top priorities. The organisation has also indicated that future decisions regarding its protest strategy will depend on the outcome of ongoing discussions with the authorities.
