Congress Reviews Preparations for November 1 INDIA Bloc Rally
The Congress has stepped up preparations for the INDIA bloc’s proposed rally against alleged “vote chori”, or electoral malpractice, scheduled for November 1, 2026, at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi.
On October 23, Congress general secretaries Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and K.C. Venugopal met party leaders from Uttar Pradesh and Haryana at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters to review mobilisation efforts.
The party says the rally will demonstrate opposition unity and strengthen its campaign to protect democratic rights. The INDIA bloc has also been demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Priyanka Gandhi and Venugopal Hold Strategy Meetings
The Congress leadership held separate meetings with leaders from Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to assess preparations for the rally.
The Uttar Pradesh meeting was attended by AICC state in-charge Rajendra Pal Gautam, former Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president Ajay Rai, state Congress working president Imran Masood and senior leaders Salman Khurshid and Ajay Lallu, among others.
The Haryana meeting included AICC in-charge Sanjay Dutt, state Congress president Rao Narender Singh, Congress general secretary Randeep Surjewala and MP Deepender Hooda.
The discussions focused on bringing party workers and supporters to Delhi and coordinating participation in the proposed rally and march.
‘United in Protecting Democracy’: Venugopal
After the meetings, Venugopal said the Congress and its INDIA bloc partners were preparing for a major mobilisation against what they describe as vote theft.
He said the programmes would send a message that opposition parties were united in protecting democracy and seeking accountability over alleged electoral irregularities.
Venugopal also accused Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and other political leaders of being responsible for alleged wrongdoing. These statements reflect the Congress’s allegations; they should not be treated as established findings of electoral fraud.
Congress Expects One Million Participants
According to Venugopal, the November 1 gathering at Ramlila Maidan will mark the culmination of a planned Delhi Chalo March.
He claimed that around one million people could participate in the march and associated programmes, with supporters expected to arrive from different parts of the country.
The figure is the organisers’ estimate and does not represent a confirmed attendance count. The scale of participation will become clearer closer to the event.
Why Is the INDIA Bloc Demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s Resignation?
The opposition alliance has been criticising the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and alleging that the process could lead to irregularities, including the wrongful removal of eligible voters.
The INDIA bloc has called for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation and has made the SIR exercise a central issue in its campaign.
The Election Commission’s electoral-roll revision process is intended to update voter lists. The dispute concerns how the process is being conducted and whether adequate safeguards are in place to protect eligible voters. The opposition’s allegations remain contested and should be distinguished from any findings by a competent authority.
Opposition Protests Have Reached the Supreme Court
The planned rally follows earlier opposition demonstrations in Delhi.
On October 12, opposition leaders, activists and civil society members participated in a March for Democracy to protest against alleged electoral irregularities and the SIR process. A joint petition challenging the revision exercise was also filed in the Supreme Court.
The following day, Rahul Gandhi hosted INDIA bloc leaders at his residence. After the meeting, opposition leaders reiterated their intention to continue the campaign against alleged “vote chori”.
INDIA Bloc Seeks to Intensify Pressure on the Government
The November 1 rally is intended to increase political pressure on the government and the Election Commission over the opposition’s concerns about electoral-roll revision.
For the Congress, the event also offers an opportunity to demonstrate coordination among INDIA bloc partners and mobilise supporters around the issue of voting rights.
The extent of participation by other alliance partners and the final arrangements for the rally will be important indicators of the opposition’s ability to sustain a coordinated campaign.
