D4vd’s Father Sold Property, Took Out Loan Amid Singer’s Legal Woes: What We Know

Los Angeles: Singer D4vd, whose real name is David Anthony Burke, is facing another major development in his high-profile legal case after his private lawyers withdrew and a public defender took over his defence. At the same time, attention has turned to recent property transactions involving his father, Dawud Burke, raising questions about the family's finances.

According to real-estate records reviewed by TMZ, Dawud Burke sold a three-bedroom, two-bathroom home in Houston, Texas, for $229,000 in early July 2026. Records also show that he took out a $138,000 loan against another Houston property in April.

However, there is no established evidence that these transactions were made to finance D4vd's criminal defence. Their timing has attracted attention because they came amid growing questions over the singer's ability to pay for his legal representation.

D4vd switches from private lawyers to public defender

The property revelations come days after a major change in D4vd's legal team.

During a Los Angeles court hearing on August 31, his prominent private lawyers, including Blair Berk, withdrew from the case. Burke is now being represented by the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The change followed a court determination concerning Burke's financial eligibility for appointed counsel. Despite evidence presented in court that he earned at least $10 million between 2023 and 2025, his private legal team was allowed to withdraw and a public defender was appointed.

The development has prompted questions because D4vd's music career had generated substantial income before his arrest.

Why the family's property transactions are under scrutiny

Dawud Burke's recent real-estate activity has become a talking point largely because of its proximity to the legal developments surrounding his son.

The Texas property sold in July was reportedly an 1,819-square-foot home, while the property against which the $138,000 loan was taken was a separate Houston residence of about 1,260 square feet.

Reports have not established that the money from the sale or loan was transferred to D4vd or used for his legal defence.

That distinction is important. A property sale or loan taken out by a family member does not, by itself, demonstrate that the proceeds were intended to cover a defendant's legal expenses.

What is D4vd accused of?

D4vd is facing serious charges in connection with the death of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez.

Rivas' remains were discovered in September 2025 inside the front trunk of a Tesla registered to Burke. Prosecutors later charged the singer with first-degree murder, continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14 and unlawful mutilation of human remains.

Prosecutors allege that Burke killed Rivas after she threatened to expose their relationship and that the alleged motive was connected to protecting his career. Burke has pleaded not guilty and has denied the allegations through his defence.

A judge has already found sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to trial following a preliminary hearing.

Victim's family questions financial hardship claim

The change in legal representation has also triggered criticism from Rivas' family.

Their attorney, Patrick Steinfeld, has questioned Burke's claim that he could no longer afford his private lawyers, pointing to his successful music career, business interests and reported earnings. The family has expressed concern that taxpayers will now bear the cost of his appointed defence.

Burke's financial circumstances are therefore becoming an increasingly important part of the legal proceedings, although the court's decision to appoint a public defender does not determine his guilt or innocence.

What happens next?

D4vd remains in custody without bail. His next major court appearance is scheduled for October 19, 2026, when the case is expected to move forward toward trial proceedings.

For now, the property sale and loan involving his father remain separate financial transactions with no publicly established link to D4vd's defence costs.

The developments nonetheless add another layer to an already closely watched case involving one of the music industry's most prominent young artists.
