'Preserve CCTV': Delhi HC on plea alleging police brutality during CJP protest

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed authorities to preserve CCTV footage while hearing a petition alleging police brutality during the recent Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) protest in the national capital.

The direction came as the court heard allegations that protesters were subjected to excessive force during the 'Chalo Sansad' march, which witnessed clashes between demonstrators and security personnel near Parliament and Jantar Mantar.

Court orders preservation of evidence

During the hearing, the High Court instructed the concerned authorities to ensure that all relevant CCTV footage linked to the protest is preserved.

The court observed that retaining the recordings would help safeguard crucial evidence and assist in the fair adjudication of the matter as legal proceedings continue.

The Bench did not make any findings on the allegations at this stage, indicating that the matter would be examined after considering the material placed on record.

Plea alleges excessive police action

The petition before the High Court alleges that protesters were subjected to excessive force during the demonstrations, resulting in injuries and violations of their fundamental rights.

The petitioners have sought judicial intervention, alleging that the police response was disproportionate and calling for an independent examination of the events that unfolded during the protest.

Police defend their actions

Delhi Police have maintained that personnel acted in accordance with the law to maintain public order and prevent protesters from entering restricted areas around Parliament.

Authorities have also registered multiple FIRs related to the protests, including cases involving alleged attacks on security personnel and violations of prohibitory orders.

The Centre has defended the police action, stating that the measures were necessary to ensure public safety and security.

The High Court is expected to continue hearing the matter in the coming days after the concerned parties place additional records before the court.
